Twin Babywearing Adventures –

Megan’s Twin Babywearing adventures continue this week. Read her latest (and final) post from her ERGObaby adventures below

_______________

We’ve had the ERGObaby’s for 3 weeks now and we have definitely given them a workout! I honestly don’t know how we survived without them, they are indispensible.

They’ve helped me prepare dinner (no crying babies even though it is usually their “arsenic” hour!).

They’ve helped me play with my bigger boys.

We’ve been on trips to the park. We’ve ventured out on public transport for the first time, and I can’t tell you how much EASIER it is to shop when you don’t have to worry about the pram fitting or manoeuvring around people.

The ERGObabys have made my life easier. It only took a few minutes to get the hang of using them. It took a little bit more fiddling to find the strap lengths and positions that were most comfortable for me. They’re really comfortable to wear. I can easily wear them for a couple of hours at a time now. And I LOVE that it fits both myself and my husband. I took great pleasure throwing out our old carrier!

The ERGObabys have been so freeing: no more worrying about having the right pram with us; no worrying about if the pram will fit through doorways/walkways etc; no pushing empty prams while juggling babies who really just want to be held.

But the best bit? The really truly cream of the crop best bit? Holding my babies close to me while having my hands free for my older boys.

Thank you Babes in Arms for giving us the opportunity to trial and review the ERGObaby Performance Carriers for you. We are so very grateful.

Twin Babywearing Adventures – Out and About ERGO style

We decided to give our new ERGObaby Performance carriers an outdoor workout today with a walk to the cross look-out at Mt Macedon. Normally the trip involves lugging the pram in and out of the car, stopping along the walk to settle/feed babies, older kids fighting over who gets to hold my hand, trying to push a twin pram with 1 aching hand…chaos basically!

It was so nice to be able to get there, tuck the babies into their ERGObaby’s and just get going.

No hauling the pram out, fussing with straps and seat positions etc etc. And my very favourite bit? Being able to do the walk with both babies snuggled close and happy while having 2 hands free for my older boys, no fights over who gets to hold mummy’s hand!

I was a bit nervous about how I would cope carrying both babies on the walk. It’s not a huge walk, but there are gentle hills and my back still isn’t 100% recovered from pregnancy. My husband was with me so I knew I could switch babies over to him if I needed. In the end my nervousness was completely unnecessary. We did the walk (slowly with 2.5yo walking), looked at the gorgeous view, took lots of photos and it was wonderful.

I even managed to breastfeed Sebastian (not that you could tell!).

I expected to be sore by the time we got back to the car. My legs were from the hills, but I was still perfectly comfortable carrying the babies. Who needs a pram when you’ve got an ERGObaby?

Twin Babywearing Adventures – Day 1

Megan was bursting with excitement on receiving her new ERGObaby Performance carriers to trial with Ollie and Bas. She raced to the bathroom with her iphone and snapped all the first moments for us (She was too excited to wait for her husband to get home and take his camera out :-) ). As soon as the kidlets were asleep for the night, she typed up her very first post for us. Now that’s committment! I think we have an ERGObaby lover on our hands (wait for her next blog posts which describe the days following).

Day 1

I’m Megs, mum to Jack (4), Lewis (2.5) and 6 month old twins Oliver (Ollie) and Sebastian (Bas). I love babywearing. I wore the twins in a stretch wrap when they were tiny newborns and I still use a ring sling for breastfeeding when out and about. The ring sling is great for feeds but now they’re getting bigger my back hurts after a maximum 20 minutes of use. And there is no way they’d fit in the stretch wrap together anymore!

The arrival of the ERGObaby‘s was very exciting. There I was, in the kitchen, calmly opening a package that I was expecting to be an eBay purchase. I opened it and immediately saw gorgeous, green. What the?? I didn’t order anything green?? Pull it out and OMG!!!! It’s the ERGObaby’s for me to trial!!!! *squeel*

Naturally I couldn’t wait. Luckily Bas was awake and I quickly put him on.

Bursting with excitement...Megan whips out her iPhone for her first ERGObaby images

So. Easy! Scooted him around to my back….this is AWESOME! Again, couldn’t possibly wait for Ollie to wake up> Put the second ERGObaby on my front and tried my lightweight 4yo in it. Too cool. Love!

Impatient for Twinlet 2 to Wake Up - Tries it with 4 Year Old Instead

Luckily Ollie woke up quickly and I put him in the ERGObaby on my front. He giggled as I was putting him in. Great sign, right? It was easy to put on, took a minute of contortions to work out how to buckle the chest strap at the back but that was it. So easy!

Righteo - Both on Now. Let the Adventures Begin!

For the next hour I carried them. Bas went to sleep and Ollie chatted up a storm. I made lunch for myself and the older 2. I changed a nappy. I tidied up. I ate my lunch while it was fresh and warm!! All with happy, quiet babies. After an hour I found my hips starting to feel the pressure. It wasn’t painful, more fatigue I think. That’s where we ended our first day using the ERGObaby. I think this is going to be the start of a beautiful friendship…

Stay tuned for further adventures in Twin babywearing……

Introducing Our Twin Wearing Supermum!

A month or two ago, the Babes in Arms team posted a callout for mums (and dads) of twins to nominate themselves to trial some of our babywearing products. We were inundated with Expressions of Interest. There seems to be a real interest by parents of multiples to try babywearing. Dubbed “Supermum’s” by many on our facebook page we were keen to see how babywearing could be integrated into the world of multiples.

Megan and her gorgeous boys caught our eye. As a mum of 4 under 4, we thought she would be perfect to test two ERGObaby’s out and show us whether they could help support a family with multiples.

Her first email included this little description:

“My beautiful boys Oliver and Sebastian are 5 months old (yesterday, how time zooms by!). When they were newbies I loved snuggling them both in a stretch wrap, they’re now much too big for this and I find the stretch wrap to not be supportive enough for my back to single carry (besides the fact that having one baby on your front makes it a bit awkward to tend to or breastfeed the other baby!). We still use a ring sling now for when we’re out and about and either of the babies need to feed.

I’m a mum to 4 under 4 including the wee twinlets. I would LOVE to find a system of carrying the twins to

a. keep them safe from their big brothers

and

b. allow me to keep going with my day when the twins are having an unsettled day.

Oliver in particular LOVES to be cuddled to sleep, I’m more than happy to do it but when there are 3 other children requiring your attention it’s not always possible. It would also make trips to the park MUCH easier, a carrier can boldly go where no pram can go, especially not my monster pram that seats 3! And I’d be willing to bet the babies would adore the opportunity to hang out close to mum!

So we posted two ERGObaby Performance carriers out to her and waited patiently (well sort of patiently) to hear how she went. We didn’t have to wait long….

Babywearing and Twins – an Overview

Ever since we started our blog we have received numerous requests to post a blog or two on babywearing with twins. So, over the last few months I have been reading almost everything that I can get my hands on that involves multiples and babywearing. I have had a fair bit of experience tandem babywearing, but there is a two year gap between my little ones so I was initally a little perplexed – how could I provide you with advice around babywearing your babies who are the same size? So I did what all good reserachers do and sourced a small group of parents with multiples who could tell me. So…..over the next few weeks we will post a blog or two about twin babywearing.

If you are a babywearing parent of twins, please feel free to provide us with further insight at anytime! We would love your opinions, tips and images.

The world of the multiple birth parent is somewhat daunting to me. The idea of double the nappy changes, double the feeds, double the bathing had originally led me to believe it was all double trouble! Especially, when initially assuming that multiple births also meant no babywearing, or at least limited babywearing (the use of a sling or carrier to support a baby/child for an extended period of time).

It took a friend’s birth of amazing twin girls for me to realise that multiples are DOUBLE THE JOY (two tots hugging you, two tots saying “luuuve you mummy!” ah bliss), and that babywearing is indeed possible with slight accommodations. Not that I believe raising multiples is easy by any means, but as mothers we are so adaptable, and the blessing of twins is certainly one to enjoy.

So how does one enjoy babywearing with twins? Todays post provides some quick tips on twin babywearing positions that I’ve learned from my friends with twins, from research and from my own experience of carrying both an infant and toddler simultaneously.

To begin with, newborn twins can often begin their babywearing experience by sharing a pouch or sling simply by placing them in the tummy to tummy position, they can be carried side by side. Newborn babies often enjoy being this close together since it mimics what multiples experience in the womb (remembering all of the safety recommendations of course! See Safe Babywearing Posts here). Babes in Arms recommend the Peanut Shell sling/pouch or the Breeze Baby ring sling which both offer excellent weight distribution across the shoulder. Alternatively, you can carry in the cradle carry position by placing one twin in a sling or pouch and placing one sling on each shoulder. The advantages of using sling or pouch with the twins in either the tummy to tummy or cradle carry positions is that you can nurse either baby with a little practise whilst carrying them.

Please note that if your twin babies are prem or have any health complications, please ensure that you sign off with your health practitioner as to whether the babies are physically able to be carried in a sling or pouch. The key consideration for pre-term babies is muscle tone. If a baby has not yet developed enough muscle tone and is placed in a cradle carry in a sling or pouch, their chin may press against their chest and they may suffer ‘positional asphyxiation’. In addition to your health professional’s guidance, I recommend offering further support behind a baby’s back simply by folding up a little receiving blanket and placing it behind it lengthwise, behind and parallel with baby’s back. This will offer more firmness and avoid baby’s chin pressing to his/her chest.

As the twins grow, they can still be carried in two slings crossed-over using the hip carry position but since their weight will be steadily increasing, it would be wise to consider investing in two soft-structured carriers like the ERGObaby Carrier that can be worn on the front, back or hip. Using the ERGObaby Carrier for older babies will offer more comfortable and longer carry positions since it distributes the weight of your babies primarily to your hips, your body’s natural load bearing ledge. Once your babies can sit up unassisted they are able to be carried on the back. Since the most important aspect of babywearing for a parent is to try to balance the weight as evenly as possible, this means using the ERGObaby Carrier in two opposite hip carry positions or one on the front and one on the back. Should you be using the front and back simultaneous solution, I would recommend placing the heavier of the two babies (or the least fussy baby at the time) on the back and then placing the second baby on the front. It is possible to breastfeed on the go using the ERGObaby’s front carry position simply by extending the shoulder straps and lowering the baby down to the breast.

For more budget conscious parents, rest assured that you may also like to consider a combo babywearing option whereby using a sling or pouch on the front and invest in only one ERGObaby Carrier for back carry positions.

Alternatively, both parents could carry a bub each! Sling or carrier….
