Travels in Europe with a baby, toddler and an ERGObaby carrier!

I love my ERGObaby carrier! It’s the best carrier in the world. We have travelled around Australia, America, England, Germany, France, and Italy with it and it’s never missed a beat.

It’s hard to say when the Ergo has been at its most useful, at the airport, winding through little cobbled streets, climbing thousands of stairs or bushwalking. One thing is for sure, the way it folds up to practically nothing has been a life saver and when it gets dirty, we can just throw it in the wash.

We went to so many places you couldn’t have gotten away with carrying in your arms or pushing a stroller. We were out for long days regularly so Zadan would just have his nap on the go, safe and snuggled up with his Mum or Dad. We could wear the Ergo for hours and hours without getting uncomfortable. Up high in the Ergo, Zadan was always right in the action, so he could see everything that was going on.

I also really love the way it’s so easy to put the kids in and out of the Ergo.

On the Campaign Trail

My now 8 month old daughter Millie and I have been hitting the political rally circuit in support of home birth in Australia and wherever we go she is always in her trusty ERGObaby Carrier. On my back, on my front and on my hip,we wouldn’t travel any other way. From Brisbane to Canberra in September for “The Mother of all Rallies”, Millie was quiet and happy in the Ergo continuously from 9am when we landed until 10.30pm when we finally got home. A long day, but she was comfortable and so was I. We breastfed, we cuddled and we had an amazing day standing up for our rights to birth where we went. November, back on the campaign trail again outside KRudd’s office here in Brisbane, Millie again travelled in her trusty Ergo blaring her political message on the front. And with the Ergo backpack accessory we have everything we need for a day or more out on the go, not only for Millie, but for me and her two brothers and Daddy too.

Travels to the United States – Babywearing Style!

We specifically purchased one of your Ergo baby slings to travel with my Lilly to the States in June this year. We didn’t need a stroller…the Ergo baby did it all.

The perks for travel with the Ergo baby for us was the following
a.. I have a big baby and at 12 months wearing the Ergo Baby I could barely feel her weight
b.. Negotiating our way in and out of airports and customs lines, baggage lines and check in lines was a breeze with the sling! Prams crash into people and are hard to negotiate in and around a crowd!
c.. Lilly fell asleep in the Ergo baby a lot! She slept against my chest in the customs line at LAX and we even had to hold her head up to show the customs officer her face!! The sling is like a sedative! That’s proves how comfy they are
d.. Off the beaten track. I was the envy of my friends because I didn’t have to push a stroller up and down hills and rocky paths. With Lil on my back in the Ergo baby it was easy! No path too rocky no beach to boggy!
e.. The Ergo baby is so light and packs up small for travel.
f.. Lilly felt part of the journey. With Lil on my back I felt so close to her when we were walking around exploring. I could talk to her about everything we saw and could feel her peering over my shoulder and looking around. The closeness the sling generated for Lilly and I on our travels made everything feel so special. You can’t feel that when they are in a pram.
g.. Constant comments. People constantly remarked on what a great idea the sling was! Especially in the States!
Clearly my best pre travel purchase I made and that’s the truth!

Babywearing in Madagasacar

Entry by Karen S

I have been conducting paleontological field research in Madagascar for the last 10+ years. When my daughter was born in 2006, I wanted to bring her on my expeditions, and planed to carry her everywhere (something all Malagasy mothers do with their own children). My ERGObaby carrier was perhaps the most important piece of equipment I brought from home! It made the logistical challenge of airports possible (dealing with many duffel bags and field equipment as well as a child), and made the long plane flights manageable as I could breastfeed her and get her to sleep easily. I have used it on two field expeditions (when she was ~8 months and ~ 1 ½ years), and wore her everywhere in Madagascar. She loved being able to see her surroundings yet have the closeness to me.

My husband and I even used the ERGO to hike her between our two research sites (an 8 hour hike through the rainforest). Not only was she comfortable on our backs, but it kept her entertained and happy for most of the trip!

Baby wearing is an integral part of Malagasy culture, and it was very exciting for all of our local friends to see my husband and I wearing our daughter. With another addition to our family in 2008, we plan to wear both of our girls in Madagascar next summer. We wouldn’t have been able to do these research trips without our ERGO, and we will certainly never go into the field without it in the future.

Travel with Kids – How Babywearing makes it a breeze!

Summer is nearly here! The season traditionally brings opportunity for family holidays, celebrations and travel. This can be an exciting time, but many parents become increasingly anxious as the time for travel grows closer and closer! Travel with children can be just as nerve-wracking as a trip to a dentist. Our mind’s eye envisions toddler tantrums, restless nights and the possibility of lost children!

Babes in Arms’  have a few tips on how to make travel with children easier….follow the lead of parents all over the world, leave behind the stroller, and pack a baby carrier instead!

Whether it is to the mountains for a day trip or interstate for the school holidays, baby carriers and slings allow freedom and mobility for travelling parents, and closeness and security for children. They give total freedom of movement, making holidays easy for families to enjoy.

Don’t get caught out visiting a waterfall that doesn’t have a pram friendly path to it, or a beach that is just calling for a quick stroll, but has sand that is too deep for your stroller’s tyres. Holidays don’t come around often enough to miss the special places you stumble on, and may never return to again. A baby carrier close at hand in your vehicle or suitcase will give you the freedom to get to the places you won’t want to miss.

Babywearing not only offers parents functional benefits, keeping hands free to better juggle luggage, tickets and passports, but also offers emotional support for kids on the move. Within the safe embrace of a parent’s arms, Babywearing provides a familiar place from which babies can view their new environment. Keeping our little ones close also allays our fears of ‘losing’ them in strange places! Babywearing can help a baby or toddler to fall sleep, feed easily and feel calm albeit in a new environment. Having a child who is happy and content sure makes travel easier.

Dr William Sears M.D and Martha Sears R.N (www.askdrsears.com) have been studying how baby wearing improves behaviour. “Parents would come into our office exclaiming, ‘As long as we wear our baby he’s content.’ Research has validated this parental observation: Babies who are carried more cry less.”

Before you set off, it is essential that you use a sling or carrier that you are already familiar with – you need to be comfortable and able to use the system you have. Understanding the features and available carry positions of your chosen sling or carrier will prevent flustered moments. Be aware of your carrier’s ability to be worn for the length of time you require it comfortably! Can you feed your bub whilst babywearing with your choice? Can baby comfortably sleep in the carrier? Is sitting down going to be an issue? Think through your choice.

Plan ahead so that you are not standing in a line at the airport, train station or bus depot at your child’s normal nap or sleep time. If this is unavoidable, using a baby carrier to keep your child close will help settle them if restless. A worn baby is safe, secure and happy, so transitioning (changing environments or going from wakefulness to sleep) is easier.

We hope this summer brings you and your family many wonderful memory-making adventures whether it be by the sea, in the bush or simply lounging by the local pool.
