Roving Reporter: China – Touch Down!

We were meant to fly out of Melbourne at 11.45pm but, thanks to works on the long runway which started at 12 midnight on the dot, we had to wait for staff to empty some cargo so that we were light enough to take off from the shorter runway. Two hours later, with an already exhausted little boy, we were very relieved to finally hit the skies at 2am. Thankfully, Adyn decided to sleep (almost) the entire flight. He woke just as breakfast was being served. Total =  9 hours (half of that was in my arms due to turbulence).

There are TWO things we couldn’t have travelled without:

1. Boobies: yes my 18month old STILL breast feeds, and yes all the funny looks are highly entertaining (at least for me anyway).

2. Our new ERGObaby Carrier. I can’t get over how comfortable it is and with 2 hours straight at Hong Kong I was still comfortable and happy to be carrying my little 10.6kg boy.

Although Adyn loves to walk (or should I say run), the distance we had to walk in one of the three airports was tiring, even for me. At Hong Kong airport we also had to take the train (it travels so fast, if you blink you’ll miss the ride) and a bus to get to our gate (507). Adyn was well protected and safe from slamming doors in his ERGO. He also loved being able to bury his head into my chest to hide from the constant hands wanting to touch him. The Chinese seem to have a fascination with his (extremely) long eye lashes and almond shaped eyes. At least that’s what I think they’re trying to tell us as we don’t understand them and they can’t understand us (which makes for an entertaining conversation).

Driveway lined with leaf-less trees

After 1 car ride, 3 planes, 1 train and 1 bus we finally arrived in Jinan only to be ushered to another car by our driver, Mr Lee, to make the last hour of our journey by car. I had been told about the roads and driving here but wow!! Mr Lee was relatively tame compared to some of the other drivers on the road (may be because we had Adyn with us). The expressways are extremely wide and seem to flow really well. Unless there’s an accident at which time what looks like 2 lanes to us seems to become 4 or 5 lanes for the Chinese. Yet with all the weaving, honking and gasping in fear there were no further accidents and the traffic never once stopped flowing. Adyn’s new favourite sound is now “beep beep” though.

Xuehua Hill Hotel

After all that drama we arrived safely in our Hotel only to encounter our next battle… communication. With a lot of pointing and gesturing we managed to get to our room, and even managed to order dinner (with a bit of help from 1 (partially) english speaking waiter). Everyone seems to be obsessed with Adyn. They want to hold and cuddle him and he is getting very overwhelmed… enter the ERGO. For some reason when he is in his carrier the staff seem to take it as a sign to keep away and wave from a distance. So, from now on when he needs a break the ERGO will be happily worn.

View from the hotel carpark (not visible by the afternoon due to smog)

This morning Jacob had to check in at work, so Adyn and I took a brief walk around the grounds. There looks to be a lot of mountains around here which I look forward to exploring. ERGObaby and Baby legs were both happily worn this morning! Sadly, Adyn’s body clock is yet to adjust, so our walk was cut short by a very tired little boy (hopefully we can get him sleeping in his ERGO so we don’t have to rush home when he gets tired).

Hoping some snow arrives soon. We can’t wait to introduce Adyn to snow! It’s actually quite warm here (for winter) at the moment. The trees have shed all their leaves and the ground is all brown just waiting for the snow to beautify it. The hotel is building their giant Christmas tree out the front complete with a giant star. We look forward to telling you all about our exploration of the area in our next post.

Roving Reporter – Covering China

Over the next few weeks we will be following Teresa, Jacob and Adyn (18 months) as they explore a Chinese winter and then a New Zealand summer. As our roving reporter, Teresa will provide us with some weekly updates and will let us know how travelling with a toddler and an ERGObaby is possible.

………………………………………………………………….…………………….

Teresa’s Travel Plans:

We will be flying into Shanghai, hopefully stopping over as we’ll need winter clothes, and I’d really like to have a look around. If not we’ll stop there on our way home. We then fly to Jinan and drive 1 hour to Zuoping. It’ll be freezing at this time of year -18 degrees average is what we’ve been informed.

I hope to get out and about with Adyn during the week and look around Zuoping but we are limited as to where we can get to with a language barrier. Zuoping has a lake and mountains so I’m not sure how exploring those in winter will go :) Otherwise Jacob has every Sunday off and we WILL be using this as our main travel and sight see days.

We plan on visiting the Terracotta warriors, and a couple Buddhist temples. We’re there for a minimum of 6 weeks so I plan on cramming as much in as I can (we’re reallyonly limited by the weather and the language barrier).

Zuoping is a rural town and english is not often used or learnt. The most I can say is hi, thank you ask for a drink of lemonade or water or beer. So not much use on the buses or taxis :) Luckily Jacob has use of a translator but he’ll be needed for work times…

The ERGObaby will be worn in airport lines, in heavily populated areas as Adyn is quite scared of strangers and most likely in the historic/religious areas as I’d hate for Adyn to go running amuck through everything :)

We’re hoping to come home to Australia briefly before embarking on our annual holiday to New Zealand. In NZ we will be staying in the sunny Bay of Plenty (Tauranga, Mount Maunganui) visiting friends, family and the scenery we miss. The Ergo will be used for hiking mountains (at least Mount Maunganui hopefully we can fit a couple more in) and walking around lakes (in Rotorua) etc. We will be borrowing the in-laws camper to travel around the north island. Hoping to take Adyn to Cathedral Cove in Whitianga (only accessible by foot) this scenery was used in The Chronicles of Narnia, Prince Casbian. Time willing we will also be flying down to Wellington (and possibly Christchurch) to visit more family.

Travelling this Summer? Choose the Best Carrier for You

Travelling with small babies and children can be challenging. Follow the lead of jet-setting parents, leave the stroller behind, and pack a baby carrier instead! We know you’ll enjoy the chance to travel light, and will love the freedom that carrying your baby close to them can bring.

Don’t get caught out again visiting a waterfall that doesn’t have a pram friendly path to it, or a beach that is just calling for a quick stroll, but has sand that is too deep for a stroller’s tyres. Holidays don’t come around often enough to miss the special places you stumble upon. A baby carrier close at hand will give you the freedom to get to the places you won’t want to miss.

ERGObaby Carrier

The versatile ERGObaby Carrier offers hands-free closeness like no other! From premmie to preschooler – ERGO’s revolutionary design means comfort won’t be compromised. The ERGObaby can be worn on the front, back and hip and has a max. weight limit of 20kgs. Weighing less than a kilo – it’s your ideal travelling companion.

Peanut Shell Baby Pouch

The Peanut Shell Baby Pouch is a compact and convenient way to carry your child – hands free. It is suitable for premmies to toddlers up to 16kgs, and can be worn five ways. The Peanut Shell folds down to just over a handful and is compact enough to carry in your picnic basket or daypack, and can double up as a blanket, change mat or breastfeeding cover too. It is available in a variety of different fabrics to suit different climates.

Breeze Baby Sling

One of the things that makes the Breeze Baby different to other slings is that it can be worn anywhere. This product, made from an ultra light, certified non-toxic mesh fabric, is cool and quick drying, and can be worn in the sea, the swimming pool or in the shower. Featuring five distinct sling positions, it’s perfect for snuggling newborns or toddlers up to 15 kilos in weight—adjusts easily to provide a comfortable fit for different wearers and can be easily packed away in a nappy bag. It’s also incredibly strong, with aluminium rings that have been product tested up to 180 kgs.

Make your summer holiday one to remember, and get the most out of every moment with a Baby Carrier from Babes in Arms.

My ERGObaby Has Seen the Philippines!

18 days in the heart of Manila, a 17 month old toddler and 16 weeks pregnant. The ERGO saved my life!

My Filipino mother booked tickets for a family trip home before I discovered I was pregnant for the second time, and my partner had to stay behind for work commitments. From past visits, we knew a stroller was not going to work in the hustle and bustle of the city, so I pulled out our ERGObaby carrier. My parents, my two sisters and their partners all found the carrier to be well-fitting and comfortable while carrying my 18kg son Ashton, even as he had to be carried in the front position for safety.

My family and extended family at the Manila Ocean Park. My father is wearing Ashton.

Through the mass swine flu epidemic, the stifling heat and humidity, ongoing bouts of traveller’s diarrhoea and the crowds of strangers we drew for having fairer skin, we each carried Ashton in the ERGO no matter how short or long our trip was. We all fell ill at some point, I was constantly fighting off strangers’ attempts to touch my son and we were without the security of seatbelts among other luxuries we’re accustomed to. Ashton slept soundly in the ERGO and loved being close to someone when he was sick, and I was reassured in knowing he was safe and snug with somebody who carried him just as comfortably.

My mother wears a worn out Ashton.Philippines 104

While my family and I have now learnt our lesson about going overseas during a sickness pandemic, the next trip back is definitely quite some time away but I have no doubt in my mind that our ERGObaby carrier will be the first thing I pack in  my carryon luggage. My second child is due in three weeks now and I can’t wait to use the carrier with her!

Thank you.

Travels to Vietnam and Cambodia with an ERGObaby (& a 15 month old!)

Submitted by Sandy

We recently took  the ERGObaby carrier overseas with us for 3 weeks (to Vietnam and Cambodia) as it was the only means of transporting Stella about in and it was fabulous. At 15 months, Stella is 10kg but I was very comfy with her in this, and she was too, half the time she was asleep! Which is perfect as then I could enjoy the things we were looking at like the Angkor Wat temples and hiking around the ethnic minority mountain villages near Sapa. I preferred to wear Stella on my front, but for longer walks, on the back is better. My longest walk was a pretty continuous 5 hour hike gradual uphill walk – I was exhausted but physically comfortable. The other advantage is that because there is no steel frame in the Ergo, it can be tucked under a seat or table when you’re not actually wearing it, so its not a pain to have around when you’re not using it and out and about.

Holidays to Kalbarri with an ERGO and Lily

We recently went on holiday to Kalbarri with our 11 month old girl Lily.

The ERGObaby carrier was perfect for her to get around  as we were often on off road ground. We spent lots of time walking on the beach, rocks and bush tracks. Lily absoultely loves her ERGO carrier. When she sees us putting it on she  squeals in delight and trys to climb up our legs to get into it.

If she was a little tired, she would be asleep within 5 minutes of being in it.

It is so comfortable to wear, and I have a bad back, but I can easily, and comfortably carry her in this carrier.

We love it, we couldn’t live without it.

Thankyou for the helpful info you sent with it, and the fast delivery. I will definately be telling my new parent friends about Babes in Arms.

ERGObaby Carrier Makes Baby as Light as a Feather!

The ERGObaby carrier has been a huge hit! We absolutely love it – its so comfortable as my little one is a big baby and he feels light as a feather in the Ergo; plus we can also use it to carry our 2 year old on our back. My little boy is so snug, he falls asleep as soon as the hood is placed over his head (the hood is a wonderful addition, as I have used lots of slings, and they have all lacked this!). I also have many friends who are expecting their second baby who are also keen to purchase (I should be on commission!) after seeing how much I love this carrier.

I don’t have any photos at the moment but we are heading on holidays with babies and ERGO shortly so will email some to you then.

Thanks so much

Hetty

Two babies = Two ERGObaby Carriers!

We now have two ERGOs, after putting off getting one for ages with our first, now 2 ¾, we bought one when she was 18 months and loved it so much, especially when traveling interstate.  Now that I have a new baby, now 3 months, I find I am using my ERGO everyday (he’s MUCH heavier than my daughter was at this age!) because it is simply the most comfortable supportive baby carrier for both of us.  My daughter still loves going in the ERGO and so we decided to get a second one so that my husband and I can carry both of our children when we are out and about, and for our upcoming holiday.  It will also help for when one needs washing!  I have pouches, wraparound slings and I once used a framed backpack carrier, and ERGO beats them all for design.  I have had some stitching come undone on the front pocket (not structural), and I haven’t been very impressed with the ERGO backpack – I use it as my everyday carry bag and it’s hard to find things in it, the zips and Velcro are failing, and I don’t attach it to the ERGO anymore because the toggles always come loose (even when new).  But really, I know lots of people who think the ERGO is too expensive, but have without a second thought spent two or three times this amount on a pram.  Now with two ERGOs and a lightweight stroller, we’re still in front on spending (and we hardly ever use the stroller).  Many people commented on my daughter’s early control of her neck and head, and good strength and balance.  She was walking at one.  She also sleeps well despite noise and light and has a very strong attachment to both of us.  My mum often carries my little son in a sling and this is helping them to bond beautifully also.  So thanks!

Travels to Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary

We love our ERGObaby carrier … and most importantly so does our son, Ben!  I’m finding it so much more comfortable than other carriers I’ve tried as all the weight is taken on the hips meaning no shoulder strain which has caused me terrible headaches in the past.  Ben seems to find it really comfortable and has a greater degree of movement than I’d expected when he’s in the carrier, which is great for a curious little boy!

I’ve attached a photo of us at Currumbin Wildlife sanctuary where we had a great time recently feeding the lorikeets!

We’re very happy with the service and product we’ve received from you and would recommend!
