Roving Reporter – Philippines

In today’s post we take a trip to the Philippines as our super gorgeous Babes in Arms Demonstrator Heatherbell takes a plane trip with her 21 month old daughters first overseas trip.

______________

There was no doubt it was going to be an interesting trip. My parents and I were going back to the Philippines but a lot had changed since our last visit. For one; I would be taking my 21 month old daughter along without the help of my husband on her first overseas trip. Secondly, my father was now an amputee confined to a wheelchair and would heavily rely on assistance throughout the journey.

I knew that my ERGObaby was the one thing that would make this juggling act possible. But I was especially grateful to try the Performance Carrier because I was flying into the tropical summer where temperatures sat at around 35 degrees and humidity around the 90% mark all day, every day. Here, the Performance Carrier was going to come into its own.

Anyone who has travelled with their ERGObaby knows how much easier negotiating an airport is by keeping your hands free to manage the paperwork and the luggage. However, in my situation, it made a much more profound difference for me. I needed both my hands free to help my Mum with either pushing Dad or the two overflowing luggage trolleys we somehow amassed as we transited through two airports. So I was especially grateful I didn’t have to add chasing a toddler to that mix. It made it much less stressful than it already was as I didn’t have to worry where on earth she was.

Arrival at the Airport

However, where the ERGObaby came into the fore was definitely with the temperature. The Brisbane summer I was leaving pales into comparison to a Philippine summer I was stepping into. So having used a Sport and Original ERGObaby back home throughout summer, I was keen to feel the difference.

Well, the difference is huge! The lightness of the fabric, especially the inside cotton panel makes a considerable difference to airflow. I’ve always said that Babywearing is a hot business, no matter what carrier your child is in. During a QLD summer, my daughter would sweat and feel hot in an ERGObaby and that is simply a side effect of having another body attached to your own! However, with the Performance I noticed a significant reduction in the temperature of her body when I took her out and there was no sweat – this alone was a huge difference as my daughter is a huge sweater.

The carrier also served as a barrier between baby and the crowds of people. It’s a busy country and I was concerned about losing her in the crowds. And my child was born a pram hater, so I couldn’t rely on strapping her into one for longer than 10 minutes. When it got too busy and crowded, I popped her onto my back. That didn’t stop people touching her so I was grateful for the fact that she was on me and I could control contact a lot better. For sleeps, we were rarely at home, so at least I could guarantee she would have her 1+ hour sleep and I wasn’t dealing with an overtired toddler!

To Market, To Market

The sunhood was a great size and really beneficial for breastfeeding discreetly. Sadly, breastfeeding isn’t common enough in the Philippines, let alone a foreign woman feeding a toddler. Constant changes of routine and no Daddy also made for a little nervous toddler, so she relied on feeding as a comfort when feeling overwhelmed. I cannot tell you how grateful I was that I could put her on the front, clip the sunhood onto the opposite snap on the shoulder strap and feed wherever and whenever. Nobody noticed. And there were no mother’s rooms as we know them here. So I couldn’t even duck into one and sit and feed if I wanted to. This was another massive lifesaver for me as I don’t know how I would’ve coped as there is no way I could’ve just popped a feeding cover over us – anyone feeding a toddler knows how impossible that is!

Structurally, it is by far the most lightweight of the carriers, especially in comparison to the classic so it can be rolled up compactly for travel. I noticed that the back of the carrier is higher that the Sport or Classic models. Using it with a toddler I found that it was more supportive as it went up higher to her shoulders than when I use the Sport with her and so I noticed she couldn’t lean back as much (which anyone knows is a lovely habit some more adventurous kids enjoy when in the back carry). I personally found the seat to be accommodating too – I have a chubby toddler and as a result, her thighs tend to overflow out of the seat but I found it to be wide enough to accommodate her comfortably at 16 kilos.

The straps are slimline in comparison to other models yet offer the same comfort level, I think because the carrier itself is so lightweight, it doesn’t add as much to the total load. They contour well to your shoulders and adjustment is easy.

Overall, the Performance delivers all the features we know and trust about the ERGObaby – comfort for both the wearer and baby and flexibility well into toddler-hood. But the added feature of being very temperature friendly will suit users living in a more tropical climate or who love to get out and explore all that nature has to offer.

Disneyland, an ERGObaby, Two Toddlers and an Unexpected Trip to the Doctor

Today we continue Emma’s ERGObaby journey as she travels abroad with a 2 year old and 6 month old baby. Enjoy!

………………………………………………………………………………………………

Both David and I were very excited (probably more so me) to be taking the boys to Disneyland. We went to Disney as part of our honeymoon and a dream of mine has always been to one day take our family there. When an opportunity presented itself for us to travel over to the US, it was an opportunity for us to try and fulfil a dream of taking the boys to Disney.

The boys had been dream children on the 17 hour flight. Mitchell was content in his bassinet to sleep and Lachlan was very impressed that the seats had a television in the back all for his viewing pleasure.  About an hour out of LA, Lachlan became ill on the plane. David changed him into a new set of clothing only to have to repeat that process in 5 minutes time. Unfortunately this was the beginning of what was going to be a very difficult two weeks.

We arrived at LAX without further incident and were able to navigate our way through the airport and to the car hire terminal without any problems. I again used the ERGObaby with Mitchell in the front carry position, our ERGO really is worth its weight in gold.

Due to Lachlan not being 100% well, we stayed close to the hotel for the first 24 hours. The following night we went to Downtown Disney for a walk around and to show the boys what to expect over the following few days. Downtown Disney is a food and shopping precinct just at the end of Disneyland and California Adventure Park. It is a fantastic place to shop and eat. Downtown is also the connecting path between one of the main Disney Hotels and the two theme parks and is always decorated beautifully.  With it being the week following Christmas, the trees and shops were decorated with beautiful Christmas garlands and lights. Lachlan was immediately transported somewhere magical.

Downtown Disney

What we weren’t planning on was the cold weather. We had been to LA before but it was not this cold.  The ERGO was fantastic for keeping Mitchell snugly and warm. I carried him with a blanket wrapped around his legs and knew that my body heat was keeping him warm whilst we were walking around.

We thought by Thursday Lachlan was probably well enough to brave Disney. It was only a 2 minute shuttle ride away from our hotel and he was wanting to leave the hotel room and play.  We didn’t end up getting down to Disney until about 11am.  We walked in and straight away Lachlan saw Mickey Mouse, which he thought was wonderful.

Meeting Mickey Mouse

Disney was incredibly busy. It had reached capacity on both Monday and Tuesday following Christmas and speaking with the Disney Staff, they told us that they had never encountered crowds like they had this particular week. Ques to rides were in excess of 2 hours and there were even Marshalls directing pedestrian traffic, it was insane.  I was so glad that we weren’t fighting with a pram. I was able to keep Mitchell close and warm to me and Lachlan was happy to walk or be picked up if he wanted to see something.

California Adventure Park – Hello Goofy

The Famous Teacup Ride

We lined up and took Lachlan on the Carousel and tea cups. Unfortunately he didn’t want to go the Dumbo ride *sob* After the Tea Cups we started heading down to Toon Town where you can meet some of the Disney Characters and tour Mickey’s house etc. Toon town is geared to the younger guests and it is bright, colourful and wonderful.  As we were making our way down, David realised that Lachlan’s hands had started to swell and were quite red.  We rolled his sleeves up and red welts were appearing all over his hands in front of our eyes.  It looked as though he had started to have an allergic reaction to something. So we turned around and started making our way to the First Aid room.  Upon presenting at the first aid room, they told us we needed to give Lachlan some Benadryl, wash his hands and start icing them.  We did this and the red lumps started to go away. After about 30 minutes his hands were swollen but had not lumps on them as we were packing up to go, the red lumps started appearing further up his arms. We were given a list of urgent care facilities and it was suggested that we take Lachlan to be looked at by a Dr.

Mitchell and his Mickey ears

We ended up at St Joseph’s hospital that night and the Dr’s that reviewed Lachlan believed the skin irritation was possibly part of the virus that he had.  We didn’t get home until after 11pm and I wore Mitchell all day in the ERGObaby, both he and I were very comfortable and warm :-)

The following day we stayed home in the Hotel again to give Lachlan some more time to rest and that we would head down to Sea World at San Diego if he was ok on Saturday.

Friday was incident and spot free at the Hotel so Saturday we drove down to San Diego with the intentions of going to both Sea World and the San Diego Zoo, San Diego was about an hour and a half drive away.  We arrived at Sea World just in time for the Dolphin Show, which was great. We had to walk high up into the stadium for a seat but this was easily done using the ERGObaby and David helping Lachlan. Unfortunately, directly following the show, Lachlan started breaking out in welts and started puffing up again. After speaking to the medic in the First Aid room, they suggested that we take him down to the local children’s hospital.  We just couldn’t believe it, we hadn’t even been at Sea World 2 hours.  So off we went again, to a new hospital this time! We arrived home late again after visiting San Diego and still were none the wiser as to what was happening with Lachlan.

Sunday was our last day in LA. We decided that we wanted to give Disney one more go. Lachlan seemed fine in himself, he wasn’t itchy and his appetite had picked up again so off we went. Mitchell again in the ERGObaby and Lachlan walking, we waited for the shuttle bus to pick us up at the front of the Marriott.  As we were waiting, it started to drizzle.  We jumped off the shuttle at Disney and headed over to California Adventure Park. I really wanted the boys to see the Magical World of Colour show which was on at night but you had to reserve seats and get tickets. We took some photos with Mickey and Goofy out the front and headed in to reserve a seat. The rain got heavier and heavier as we wound our way through the park. Desperate not to let the rain ruin our last day in LA we picked up some umbrellas and poncho’s to try and keep dry.  I was able to wear a Poncho over Mitchell in the ERGO and we hired a stroller and wrapped this and Lachlan in a Poncho to keep him dry too.

Unfortunately the rain got heavier and heavier and reached the point where we were unable walk, the water was too deep on the pavement. Beaten and wet, we made the decision at 6.30pm to give up. It was too cold and wet to be out with two young children. Our time in LA wasn’t quite what we expected. The ERGObaby again was a god send. I was able to navigate easily through busy crowds, hospitals and was even able to take Mitchell on the Tea Cup ride with him securely attached to me.

Last Day – Outside our Hotel

We left LA hoping that New Orleans was going to bring us some better luck.

Roving Reporter: That’s All Folks!

So… to sum up; the ERGObaby Carrier Sport is THE ESSENTIAL travel item!!! The sports carrier was great for both extreme winter conditions and summer conditions. It is super comfortable and easy to use. I love that it is easily adjusted between Jacob and my body. Oh and the best part… it can go in the washing machine and dry on the line! Adyn loves to be carried and I love the versatility of carrying him on our backs or front. He sleeps peacefully in his ERGObaby and I can rest assured he is safe; out of harms way, and sitting in a spine friendly position.

That’s it folks… Thanks for coming on our crazy adventure, and I hope I didn’t bore you too much :) Thanks, also Babes in Arms for the opportunity to review such awesome products. We’ll be forever recommending your website to our friends and families

Roving Reporter: The Wind Down….New Zealand is on the Horizon

When we first arrived in China I asked Jacob why everyone wears  masks over their faces. He thought it was cause of the smog. I now believe it is to keep their noses warm.  Seriously, this is the first time in my life that I’ve wished that I owned a balaclava (to keep my face from freezing). Thank goodness for the Winter Weather Cover on the ERGObaby. I still wish someone would carry me in a giant ERGO! Adyn looks so snug and warm in there!

This week Adyn and I went on a couple walks: another walk around the lake and a walk up the hills surrounding the hotel. There are big fences/walls along the hills and I’ve been waiting for a warmish day to explore it…

The End of our Walk

…we didn’t make it to the wall as there was a barrier in the way. If it was just me I probably would of climbed the dirt and rocks and carried on but I didn’t think it was a safe climb with Adyn. Adyn and I had a little run around at the top of the hill before making our way promptly down due to Adyn making a deposit in his nappy, gotta love his timing! Once again I wore our ERGObaby under my jacket so Adyn was popped in and we made our way back down. We stopped at the gates so Adyn could have a chat with the security guards.

Playing at the Top of the Hill

This week we said goodbye to another of Jacob’s collegues (Peter, lucky guy was finally going home, after 60 days away from his family). We were taken out for dinner to Gu Xian Park by the company bosses (the mushroom garden/park restaurant). We thought it was brilliant last time, this time was even better. We enjoyed Hot Pot (you cook your own food in a ‘hot pot’) and some great company. Peter was nice enough to buy a farewell cake (I don’t normally get excited about cake but after 2 months of no cakes/desserts it was a really nice treat).

The Clearest Day We’ve had in China – Gorgeous! (All this time and I didn’t know that there were mountains back there!)

Sunday we were driven to the markets in Zibo for a spot of shopping. We still had a few more gifts/souvenirs to buy for friends and family. I’d been told its really good to shop with Mr Lee as he is a GREAT negotiator… well I wasn’t disappointed. We got some GREAT bargains (I won’t list them as some of the recipients may read this before I see them). We had planned on visiting a few temples and touristy spots but Adyn and Jacob were both tired so we returned home for a nap before heading to town (Zouping) to finish off our shopping and get some dinner. The ERGObaby is great when shopping in crowded places! Your little ones are safely tucked away AND you have 2 hands to browse through merchandise. The list of “why ERGObaby is the best carrier” is endless!

Beautiful Smog Free Days

Jacob and I are counting down until we get to go home, we can’t wait. We’ve loved China and all the different experiences we’ve been through, but I miss my kitchen and Jacob misses his bikes :) This time next week we’ll be in our own home, and counting down til we go to NZ. Or should I say, franticly re-packing our bags from winter to summer.

Roving Reporter: Winter Sweeps In

It is officially FREEZING here! The river down the hill is frozen. The water feature out the front of the police station is turned off and the water around the bottom is frozen solid. Adyn and I go for a walk every morning to see the diggers and trucks, this is the first time we had to turn around and go home. Adyn was so cold he started crying. I tried my best to stop him crying as I was scared his tears would freeze up like everything else. I’m at least thankful that it isn’t snowing, so we can still go out when needed.

The Road is always open for you no matter what angle you look from in this painting

We gave our ERGObaby a well needed break for a couple days (it needed a wash) and we let Adyn walk or should I say run, which also helped to keep him warm. We did however use it on our 2 trips to town. Adyn had a growth spurt and his little toes were starting to get squashed in his shoes so we  ‘had to’ go shopping ;-) . We were also starting to get low on nappies. Luckily the ‘little’ (2 storeys) supermarket in town stocks nappies.

On Sunday we took a 2.5hour drive to Qufu to visit the temple of Confucius with a few friends. It was a nice drive with lots of nice scenery to enjoy. There are mountains everywhere, I’m sure they’d look nicer in spring or summer when everything is green and alive. This was probably the most money we’d spent since arriving. It was however very informative. We paid for an English speaking tour guide to help us; he also told us a couple Chinese myths/stories. I didn’t really know a lot about Confucius or that it was even a culture (as opposed to Buddhism which is a religion) –Confucisim. Confucius was also the first teacher in China.

Confucius Temple in Qufu

Thankfully, we packed the ERGObaby as it was FREEZING again and it helped to keep Adyn toasty and warm. He would have been a lot warmer if we’d remembered to pack the winter cover too. We chose the ERGObaby Sport as it will be hot when we get to NZ, we are surprised that even when Adyn has layers and layers of clothes on the ERGObaby is still just as comfortable. Wearing Adyn also helps to keep me warm. I love when he falls asleep in his ERGObaby, I get to snuggle him just like when he was a baby.

The First Gate at Confucius Temple

To be honest it is hard trying to find things to do when you can’t speak the native language or read signs. There are more sights we’d love to visit so fingers crossed we can navigate our way there before time slips away from us again.

Confucius Shrine

’til next time…

Roving Reporter: New Years with an ERGObaby in Hong Kong

This week we travelled to Hong Kong where our ERGObaby got its biggest workout yet. Adyn was carried on planes, trains, trams and even a couple of cable cars. There is no way we could have managed without it. Adyn has also learnt to sleep in his ERGO! (of particular significance with all the travelling we are doing)

As soon as we checked into our hotel, we jumped straight into sightseeing. First stop “The Peak”. We hopped on the tram, which climbs the hill at such a steep rate the buildings looked like they were built on a tilt.

About to Board the Tram “up” The Peak. Adyn Asleep.

The trip was well worth the 1 hour wait. I’m sure there are off-peak times to go, but when we went the line was around the corner. Inside the station everyone was jammed in like sardines. Thankfully the ERGObaby carrier allowed us to squish in without needing to think of how to transport a pram! I had read previously that you need to go at night and during the day… well, they were right! The views up there were amazing and by night, they were even better. The whole city lights up.

Views from The Peak

We enjoyed dinner at the famous Bubba Gump Restaurant with views to enjoy. There was so much up there! Restaurants and shopping galore. We also bumped into a fellow ERGObaby wearer whilst at the top. The journey down was the same as going up. It actually felt like I was lying down at one point.

Waiting for our Table at Bubba Gump

Day 2 was Disneyland. I think I was more excited then Adyn. If you ever go, be prepared to spend most of your day in lines. When it comes to lines, I wish someone would pop me in a giant ERGObaby so I could have a nap too.

Adyn met Mickey and Goofy (who made him cry) and waved at Woody during the day parade. He also got a kiss from Cinderella. Adyn also loved the train ride around the park. My favourite was the river cruise where we were squirted by the elephants and shot at by some warriors.

We Meet Mickey Mouse

Adyn trying to hide from Goofy

On the way home, Adyn made friends with a little boy on the train home, who was also tucked away safely in his ERGObaby carrier. It was cute watching them reach out and high five each other. We got back to the hotel absolutely exhausted, but still grinning from the fun we all had.

Day 3 we took the train to Ngong Ping 360. Jacob asked if we could take the Crystal Cabin (a cable car with a glass bottom). I’m afraid of heights but thought it would be another good experience so reluctantly said yes.

The journey is approximately 25 minutes which runs along a 5.7km rope-way. On board you enjoy views of the South China Sea, rolling hills, Hong Kong International Airport and as you approach the top, views of the Tian Tan Buddha Statue.

At the top we explored some of Ngong Ping village before taking the ‘Walking with Buddha’ Tour. This multimedia tour allows you to follow the life of Siddhartha Gautama (the man who became Buddha) and his journey to enlightenment. Both Jacob and I really enjoyed this as it gave us more understanding of Buddhism.

After enjoying lunch, we decided to make the trek up to the Tian Tan Buddha Statue. After climbing all 268 steps (no I didn’t count, the brochure told me this), we finally made it to the top to enjoy more spectacular views. Buddha has the best seat in the house up there! Adyn fell asleep just as I reached the top, so he didn’t get to enjoy the views or climb the steps.

Climbing the Stairs to Tian Tan Buddha

Inside the Buddha statue there is a 3-storey exhibition hall, we only got to explore the bottom floor as you need tickets to climb to the top. After walking all 268 steps back to the bottom we went to the Monkeys Tale Theatre and enjoyed an animation about 3 monkeys (Tag-a-long, Doof us and Clever).

That evening we explored the night markets in Kowloon and enjoyed some late night shopping. These markets were more my style: clothes, souvenirs, shoes, bags, food… the list goes on. We scooped up a few good bargains before taking our first peak hour train back to the city.

On our last day in Hong Kong we headed towards the harbour to see what we could find. We couldn’t work out where to go and ended up in ‘The Big Bus Tours’ office. We decided to purchase a ticket and take their Stanley Tour where we could board their San Pam boat tour. The Stanley tour was great.

On Board the Sampan

If we ever come to Hong Kong again, I think we’ll stay in Stanley Bay. Adyn fell asleep on the bus but thankfully he went into his ERGObaby without waking so I could enjoy lunch and the Stanley Market. The markets there are even nicer than the night markets and the beaches and restaurants were just lovely.

If you ever have the opportunity to visit Hong Kong, DO IT! If you have young children pack your carrier or sling as public transport during peak hours was exactly like in the movies (everyone jammed in and pushing to get on board the train/tram/bus etc.). I wouldn’t even bother trying to get a pram onto a peak hour train, and I don’t think you could ever get one onto the tram.  Our ERGObaby was used every day (and evenings).

Oh and HAPPY NEW YEAR! We didn’t really celebrate this year as we had an early flight back to freezing cold Zouping the next morning. Not sure how we’ll cope going from winter – summer???

A 2 Year Old, a 6 Month Old and an ERGObaby Sport Fly to the USA

Today we bring you the beginning of Emma’s ERGObaby journey as she travels abroad with a 2 year old and 6 month old baby. Enjoy!

……………………………………………………………………………………………………

I first saw an ERGObaby carrier at the Adelaide Christmas Pageant. I turned around and standing next to me was a happy relaxed mum carrying a beautiful snugly little babe. It seemed such a natural and nurturing way to carry a child, nestled close to your heart. I started googling and reading reviews about ERGObaby Carriers and was incredibly excited when I was chosen to be a review panellist for Babes in Arms.

My ERGObaby Sport Carrier arrived the week prior to us setting off and I couldn’t wait to start using it straight away. I thought it would be perfect for zipping into the shops to finish off some last minute shopping.

I read through the instruction booklet relatively quickly. I had tried on an ERGO that belonged to a friend and thought it was relatively straight forward to use. Off to the shops Lachlan, Mitchell and myself dashed. I must add that I am a pram girl, I have a love of prams and I think this stems back to bad experiences I have had with other carriers. I also have suffered with various back complaints so I have always steered away from carriers, sceptical that a baby carrier was going to be easy and not painful to use.

The first time I used the ERGObaby Sport carrier, Lachlan was in the pram and Mitchell nestled into the ERGO. The ERGO was easy to use; Mitchell popped into the ERGO beautifully but I felt as though I hadn’t adjusted it correctly. Mitchell seemed a little low and felt a bit awkward. After arriving home, I sat down and watched some of the instructional videos hosted on the Babes in Arms blog and I have to say that these were fabulous. They helped me get to know my ERGO, how to use it, maximising its full potential and helping me to understand the safety mechanism and how to wear the boys comfortably. I have now adjusted the ERGO to suit my body and my babes and it is incredibly comfortable.

The beginning of our holiday was a long trip over to the USA, something neither my husband nor I were looking forward to. Travelling with a two year old and six month old was going to be a challenge, throw in a few suitcases, and 17 hours on a plane… what were we getting ourselves into We jumped out of the car at the airport, I popped on my ERGO, nestled Mitchell into the front carry position, held Lachlan’s hand, put the nappy bag on my shoulder and wheeled a suitcase into the airport. WHAT! Surely it couldn’t be this easy. Well it was, Mitchell settled right into the ERGO, my hands were free to hold Lachlan’s hand and help with the suitcases and other parafanalia and we were able to easily navigate a busy airport and carpark. I could tell straight away the ERGObabt Sports and I were going to be BFF!

I wore the ERGO around my waist all the way to New Zealand with the shoulder straps undone, I didn’t even notice it was on. Mitchell slept peacefully in my arms or snuggled into the ERGO most of the way there. I was able to eat wearing Mitchell. Having two hands on a plane was fantastic. We were able to zip through the airport without struggling with the two boys and luggage. The ERGObaby was off to a flying start and things would have been incredibly difficult had I not been able to use a comfortable baby carrier that both Mitchell and I adored. I still can’t believe that I am able to carry my 7kg baby without any strain what so ever on either my shoulders or back, it really is wonderful.

Coming up, LA, Disney and a whole lot of DRAMA!

Roving Reporter: A Very Merry Christmas

This week we tested out the back carry position in our ERGObaby carrier. Adyn LOVED it! He cried when I tried to take him out so I quickly re-clipped and left him in his ERGO while I tidied our room. It’s a great position: super comfortable for me and Adyn. The only problem I’ve encountered is that I can’t put my coat on over the carrier (not a biggy though) and I need help to put the winter cover on when we go out. Haven’t quite mastered getting him in and out of the back carry position. We still use a seat or the bed (if dads not around to help). I can’t wait to get to NZ and carry Adyn up the Mount now! (Ed. Note: Having trouble learning a new position? Check out the video links here for some visuals to help)

It has been an exciting week for us. We found out we’ll be staying an extra 4 weeks here in China. I’m excited as I haven’t seen half the things I had wanted to as yet, and now I have the time.

This week we went to a ‘Chinese Market’. It was an eye opener. The Chinese really do eat everything! Nothing is wasted! (I’m still coming to terms with the fact that when we order chicken we could be served any part (head, feet…)). I loved all the FRESH spices! They smelt so great, I only wish I could take BAGS of them home (Jacob wont let me). I wasn’t too keen on the raw meat out on display. Jacob informed me it is exactly the same in summer (eww… raw meat outside in 30+degrees, so not for me!).

We watched as the locals made their own sausages. They chose their ingredients from the bowls on the table (meats, spices, sauces etc.) and the stall owner minced the meat and made them into sausages. It looked like fun (I’m not sure if my stomach would handle the after-effects). There were als eggs of various shapes, colours and sizes. Even bugs (to eat) as well! They looked like cockroaches but Jacob said they were some sort of wood eating bug?? Seafood galore, including what looked like baby shrimps.

Christmas was the great event of the week. Christmas Eve we partied until (almost) midnight at the hotel (as planned). The Chinese know how to throw a party! There were massive ice sculptures (swans and fish) and a huge water feature made entirely out of food (except for the water obviously). It took me a while to realise there were also gold fish swimming around the water feature. By the time I could get close enough for a decent photo, children had started to throw pieces of pineapple and ginger at the fish and it did not look good.

Adyn had a great time dancing to the music. They had tons of entertainment from musicians (the violinist was my favorite act of the night), singers, dancers, magicians, clowns and a guy who put an electric drill to his head (don’t know what type of entertainment he is but I called him ‘nuts’).

They also had a huge raffle. Our tickets were our entry/number. When I say huge I mean HUGE! You could win anything from a big screen TV, bottles of expensive wine or port, right down to a key ring. We were lucky enough to win a 5kg bag of flour! We gave the flour to Jacob’s driver. Jacob informed me that a similar event he attended in Wuxi (another place he works in China) gave away ‘live’ chickens, and the winners of the chickens were more excited then the winners of the big prizes!

Christmas morning, Adyn woke to find Santa had visited during the night. This was his second Christmas and I believe he has mastered the art of un-wrapping (tearing and ripping) his gifts. So much so, he un-wrapped mine and Jacob’s gifts (we only had one each, so I think Jacob was slightly disappointed). Christmas sure is more fun with little ones! They get so excited!

We went shopping Christmas day (a first for me). Adyn needed nice pants for Christmas dinner, so we headed to town. Every where we went people wished us Merry Christmas and stole Christmas decorations off Christmas trees to give to Adyn. We now have a whole bag of Christmas decorations to take home! Once again our ERGO was admired.

We had a little girl, who is learning English, translate some of what her mum was asking. We had to take Adyn out of his ERGO to try on some jeans (when we found some without splits in them. Chinese children don’t wear nappies. They have splits in the crotch where they do their business out of) and once again we were surrounded by people wanting photos. This time they brought their

Little ones to play with Adyn. It was cute watching them play together! No language barrier for them! “wee” and “baa” sound the same in any language.

After lunch we went back to the hotel to Skype our families. Mine were lovely enough to tell me about all the yummy food they were enjoying. Sure did miss the Plum pudding and Custard this year!

Christmas evening we went for dinner at Gu Xian Park (translates to Mushroom Park/garden – restaurant) with friends from Jacobs work. The restaurant was AMAZING! WOW is all we kept saying. Restaurants here aren’t the same as Australia/NZ. While some have an open dining area like at home, most restaurants will seat you in a private room where you have your own waiter or sometimes two. The waiter hardly ever leaves the room; all the food is brought to a window; and the waiter will place the food on the table as it arrives. All food is shared- no ordering one meal for yourself.

Gu Xian Park was so amazing we had to go explore it. On the way we stopped by the food area and chose our dishes (our Chinese friends did most the ordering for us). Everything was so fresh! You choose your seafood from live tanks. Jacob wanted a photo of Adyn and I next to the snake until I told him it was actually alive (NO WAY! I DON’T THINK SO!!). All the food tasted great and the company was even better. Although it wasn’t a traditional Christmas, it did ‘feel’ like a Christmas with family. Adyn was spoilt with even more toys! Pretty cool toys too, although I think the men got more entertainment from his remote control car then he did.

We didn’t go exploring this Sunday as Jacob had to work since he had Christmas off and Adyn was absolutely exhausted! I think he slept half the day.

Our next report will be from Hong Kong which we are off to for 4 days! Everyone has been telling me how great Hong Kong is, so I can’t wait to experience it for myself. We’re looking forward to ‘other food’ (not Chinese) for a change, as Hong Kong is very westernized (apparently).

I hope everyone had a great Christmas!

Love from our little family in China!

Roving Reporter – Attack of the Paparazzi!

The week started off lots of fun. Adyn loved playing in the snow and I was extremely entertained watching him (and others) slip and slide on the patches of ice. After 3 days of fun in the snow, we both ended up with colds which was convenient as the hotel was hosting a government conference (with more to come) and was busy and crowded so Adyn and I were happy to hibernate in our room for a few days until it was over. It was also very smoky (not ideal with little ones around).

I have mastered ordering a taxi and getting to and from town. This has enabled us to explore more of Zouping city. Every taxi driver seems to take a different route home so we’ve got to see more of the surrounding area and lots of little villages. Today we drove through a little market (yep through the market). I’ve even grown enough courage to cross the roads (busy ones too) so we no longer have to walk the same block over and over.

Ready to explore the streets of Zhoucun (I tuck my hands between Adyn and myself to keep my hands warm (beats gloves!)

We (finally) found a supermarket so we could stock up on snacks and yogurt for Adyn. You name it they sell it!! Feel like fresh frogs?? Yep got them too (still alive and kicking)! They even have apples with love messages branded (not sure if that’s the right word??) into them, You know how they burn names onto cows/cattle? Well, like that, but apples! They look pretty cool but I’m not sure if I’d want to eat them. Finding snacks was a wee bit of a challenge. I can’t read Chinese/Mandarin so I relied purely on pictures and the little bits of English writing (if I was lucky).

Adyn Playing Checkers

Old Chinese Pillows (and I thought the bed was hard!)

Our ERGObaby carrier is our essential on outings now. While Christmas shopping, I had about 5 ladies (sales staff of the shop we were in) arguing on how to ask if I can take Adyn out so they can play with him. We had about 10 of them playing at one point. It was funny when the managers came through the door… all 10 of them scattered away so fast I had to run to catch Adyn before he fell over. Eventually they all returned to play again, this time with cameras to take photos of us. Well, of Adyn, but they did ask me to appear in a few. When I finally got him back in his ERGO they all pulled their cameras out again as they wanted photos of our ERGO and Adyn in it. We got a couple of Chrissy presents, so it was worth the effort.

Adyn’s new friend – Mr Lee’s son

On Sunday we (meaning Jacob, Adyn and I; Mr Lee (driver), Mr Lees wife and son, Kevin (Jacobs translator) and Peter (a colleague of Jacobs)) all went on a tour of Zhoucun. Zhoucun is a town inside Zibo city. It was interesting exploring old streets and shops, it covers an area of (approx) 17 hectares. We visited the shop where the first Chinese flag was made (many nice silk scarves too). They had lots of displays set up. We also saw some old Chinese shoes and what the women used to do to make their feet stop growing (apparently small feet were a sign of beauty… wonder what they would think of my size 8.5s???). We also got to watch a couple of shows. One was a magician (not sure what the other was… an entertainer maybe). He did a trick where he spun a bowl on a spoon which was spinning on a bigger spoon. Once again Adyn was ambushed by the paparazzi (not real paparazzi, just people insisting on photos with/of Adyn). Our ERGObaby carrier is often requested to feature in these photos too (which is handy when he is already in it). The guide and everyone with us were a little shocked at what we go through when we take Adyn out. It is starting to get annoying, especially when it affects the people we are with. But its not long until we’re lost in the crowd again.

This image was taken to illustrate one of the stories we were told on our tour: The upstairs rooms were for the females of the family. They would throw silk balls out of the window to potential suitors below. The one who caught it would become their betrothed.

We also visited ‘Thousand Buddhist Temple’ which was somewhat disappointing (maybe my expectations were a tad high). We found it somewhat ironic that they leave money on the shrine that you pray to “for” money… maybe that’s why they say you need to give to receive? We didn’t enter any of the buildings, mainly because we didn’t want to offend anyone, but some were also being used for prayer and I’d hate to interrupt them.

The Entertainer

On Sunday night we decided to do a bit of late night shopping. It was awesome as it was too dark for anyone to notice we look different. Never thought I’d say this but, I actually miss being ignored when I enter a shop. They literally follow you in shops. Some are trying to sell you things which is good. Others are following so they can get a closer look at Adyn (I usually stop so they can get it out of their system and leave me to shop. Occasionally, it gets annoying and I walk faster and turn him away from them (yep I can be a meanie when I want to).

I can’t believe how the time is flying!! We’re looking forward to Christmas – hopefully a white one. We’ve all got tickets to the Christmas party in the hotel (on Christmas eve) so it will be interesting to see what they put on for us. Hopefully this Sunday we can visit some more ‘must see’ sights before we head off to Hong Kong.

Roving Reporter: China – brrrrrrr……so cold!

Hi, me again!!

Well, the past week started off pretty quiet for us (Adyn and I). We spent the first couple of days trying to get Adyn onto Chinese time and working out how to communicate. Adyn was attacked by the paparazzi (hotel staff) for the first time. This lead us t0 find a shortcut throug the hotel. By day 3 we were bored and decided to go exploring.

On our first day of exploring we didn’t get far at all. The hotel is surrounded by guards.  We made the 30 minute walk to the front gate, got scared and did the BIG hike back up the hill back to the hotel closely followed by a guard (apparently for ‘our’ safe) which I found very intimidating. The next day we did a similar trek. This time we made it a bit further and even spoke to one guard (he spoke Japanese though, maybe he thought I was Japanese???). It was nice being out and about and Adyn seems to love sitting safely in his ERGObaby carrier. We are in love with the ERGO winter weather cover and BabyLegs (both essential items when heading out doors!). Whilst it is warm in the sun the wind is ffffreezing!! I can tell when Adyn’s getting cold as he likes to dig his nose into my chest to warm it up.

Saturday, Adyn and I thought we’d attempt our first taxi ride into town. This is a 30 minute trip. Again driving over here is an adventure in its self. A prime example: the sign says ‘no left turn’ – guess which way we turn? We made our destination into town and launched right into exploring the town. It was hectic! People everywhere! Cars and bikes everywhere! Wow – what an experience. If the road became too busy,  the motorbikes used the footpath instead.

The footpaths in town are lined with street vendors including food, souvenirs and even pets for sale. We did a lap around 1 block (mainly because I wasn’t game enough to cross the road yet) and eventually went inside a shopping mall. The mall was huge, just think Myers overdosing on steroids: ground floor – cosmetics, 1st floor – women’s casual, 2nd floor – women’s business, 3rd floor men’s casual…. you get the picture. It was 8 floors and we only made it to the 5th floor before deciding we had had enough. We almost felt like a human side show with people constantly stopping and pointing and staring at us (guess we do look odd to them). We also had lots of people come up to us and admire our ERGObaby carrier. They asked lots of questions… none of which I could understand or answer. We are yet to witness ‘baby carrying’ over here. All the children we have seen are carried in arms or pushed in a stroller/pram. A lot of people have shown interest in our ERGO but I’d really like to see a Chinese version in action.

Sunday is always daddy day in our family (unless work interrupts it which thankfully isn’t too often). So this Sunday we decided to take a walk around the lake before heading to town. During our walk we learnt that Confucius came from the Shangdong Province (which we are in) so we headed over to his big statue to take photos. Sadly, they were having a mini carnival type thing there so photos will have to get taken next time we’re in town. We’re now looking forward to next Sunday when we can go out and find out more about the local history. We got to watch a few fishermen reel in some fish (small, but still a good catch) and found it fascinating watching them try to thread live worms (they look like little red worms, but we’re not entirely sure what they are) onto their hooks.

Sunday was also Jacobs first time at using our Ergo, we’ve tried LOTS of different carrier/slings and while they’re all great there is always something that just doesn’t sit right. With the ERGObaby there have been no complaints from either of us (finally we found a keeper!).

All week we’ve been told that “it’ll snow Wednesday, then Friday…”.  Finally, this morning we woke to snow flakes falling through the air and the grey/brown grounds blanketed in a soft mushy white snow. After breakfast, we headed out to explore and play in it. Adyn loved his first time in the snow. It took him a while to get used to snow flakes getting stuck in his eyelashes. It was highly entertaining watching him try and walk in his snow suit without slipping over on the slippery ice. We were loving the snow until Jacob rang to say they’re attempting to walk up the driveway as the car couldn’t make it up the hill without slipping back down again (they all made it home safely though).
