A Year in the Life of an ERGObaby: Charlize Sleeps Through the Night!

Updated by Caprice

Wow time is flying around here! I can’t believe my baby is 2 months old already.

We have had a non stop month and Charlize has gone with the flow so well. She’s very easy going but that could be because she is left to wait while I change Miki’s nappies or make the older girls some lunch before she gets hers. Her big sisters love trying to get smiles out of her each day. They like to help out, getting her blankets or grabbing nappies for me and of course singing, dancing and reading books to entertain her if I’m busy.

Two big milestones this month: the first is that she rolled from front to back for the first time; and the second, she is sleeping through the night every second night! I just love hearing the birds along with her grunts when she wakes up and its morning not 3am ;-) . She loves bathtime and has even fallen asleep while I’m holding her in the nice warm bath at night.

I’ve heard people say that those that are carried a lot during the earlydays aren’t good at self settling but even though Charlize’s favourite place to sleep during the day is in my arms or the ERGObaby she sleeps so well in her cot at night.

This month she also started Gymbaroo. A friend gave me a term of the baby class as a present to celebrate Charlize’s birth and I wish I had have done it with the other 2 girls. It’s great one on one time and we do lots of exercises to strengthen her muscles and singing and dancing around which makes the little ones giggle. Charlize always falls asleep half way through, so I do the other half later on in the day with her.

She still loves sleeping in the ERGObaby and we have had a few big outings. On the long weekend earlier this month we went to the Perth Royal Show. Jayde and Miki had a great time going on rollercoasters, flying elephants and patting the farm animals. Charlize didn’t miss out either as she got to go in the ERGObaby on the carousel (pity she slept through it!) We also did a family zoo trip before my husbands membership ran out. We have had beautiful weather so far this Spring in Perth so have been getting out and about a lot and so glad I can still run after the other girls with Charlize safely tucked away in her ERGObaby.

A Year in the Life of an ERGObaby: Tahnee’s Drooling, Tandem Babywearing!

How unreal that it is October already? I’m sure you’ll agree that this year has flown by! We have made the big move safe and sound – I just have a whole lot of boxes and bags crammed into my house that needs unpacking. No easy feat when 5 kids on the loose (it beats me why we decided to move on school holidays!). The ERGObaby was an absolute godsend during the busy few weeks of packing and moving. Granted I couldn’t lift anything but I’m not going to complain about that! ;)

I mentioned in my last post about tandem baby wearing. During the school school holidays, I tried it out by popping Jye on the back and Tahnee on the front (in 2 seperate ERGO’s of course) and taking a walk with the kids to see how long it would take for us to walk from our new house to school. It was a bit tricky at first trying to place two of them, but once I worked it out it was fine. They were both happy and neither could reach the other (so no worries of them kicking or pulling at each other). I was a bit worried about the weight being on the front and back but it turns out I didn’t have much to worry about. I didn’t notice the weight on both sides much at all. Now that I’ve done it once, I think the next time will be much easier. As with anything – practice makes perfect! We’ll definitely be doing this to walk to school this term. I can’t imagine how much longer the walk would take with a 22 month old trying to walk it. We’d take more steps backwards that anything! Oh and in case you were wondering it takes us about 20-25 minutes to walk, the school is actually in the next suburb over. The only downside was that I didn’t really have much space to wear my bag over my shoulder. I have been caught without nappies and wipes before and it wasn’t a very fun experience at all (think newborn breastfed poo. Ugh!).

Tahnee has been so much more settled since we have been back in the big smoke. She will go to bed around 8-9pm instead of the 11pm or later that she was doing at the pub. She must pick up that I’m more relaxed and not preoccupied with the business. I just get to be MUM now. Man, is she growing fast though! She’s now rolling from front to back and almost back the other way again. Her little hands have been working hard at grabbing at things and it’s been a number of times that she has managed to knock my iPhone out of my hands onto the tiled floor (shh! Don’t tell hubby!) or topple over the clean washing I’ve just folded and grasp a t-shirt to suck on.

Exploring and teething means that she often has things in her mouth.  If she can’t get her hands on something, then she chews on those too. Nothing is safe from her gummy, drooly smile – not even the ERGObaby. I really dislike this stage because I don’t like to give medicine to such a young baby. We use an amber teething necklace and she has actually just cut her very first tooth without the grizzling and unsettledness that usually comes with teething. Unfortunately, nothing seems to stop the drooling! ERGObaby teething pads to the rescue! They are so nifty. Simply wrap one around the strap of the carrier where bub is sucking/chewing and then let them at it! You get two in a packet, but Tahnee tends to favour one side when she chews. Since I wear the ERGObaby so much, I just swap them when they need it. I always have one on hand, they are nice and small so fit great into the ERGObaby pocket in case she spits up on them!

Believe me, with such a busy home, it’s much easier to pop the teething pads in with your regular whites than popping the entire ERGObaby in on its own cycle (plus imagine having to go a whole day without the ERGO while it’s drying?!). So a big thumbs up from me. These teething pad will definitely get their work out and I really doubt Tahnee will stop chewing on the straps any time soon. I’m still trying to get over the fact that she has a tooth and she is barely 5 months old!

Look forward to sharing our next adventures with you!

Herald Sun Covers Babywearing! Baby Wear Gets a Grip on Australian Men

The Herald Sun (Melbourne) covered babywearing yesterday, writing a lovely piece on the benefits of father babywearing. We were so excited to see an ERGObaby wearing dad featured and both Babes in Arms and Anita mentioned! What a great way to wrap up Australia & NZ Babywearing week, don’t you think?

Here it is:

By Elissa Doherty From: Herald Sun  October 12, 2010 8:06PM

DADS are carrying the bundle – and embracing it with open arms. The baby-wearing craze is now hooking men, with specially tailored carriers and slings. Having evolved from the hippie-style cloth slings, baby carriers now feature pockets for mobile phones, added functionality and longer straps.

The chief executive of distributor Babes in Arms, Anita Lincolne-Lomax, said, “The more involved the man is early on with the baby, the better it is for their relationship long term. Baby-wearing means a man is able to get out of the house without all the fuss. “They don’t have to lug a pram around or try to navigate it over sand. “They can still lead an outdoor healthy lifestyle.” She said baby-wearing helped parents and bubs bond, aided with reflux and helped prevent hip misalignment and flat-head syndrome.

But the absence of Australian safety standards for baby carriers is a growing concern. One style of sling reportedly caused three baby deaths in the US last year. Concerns have also been raised about the risk of suffocation and the potential for babies to fall out. Monash University Accident Research Centre said at least 16 children under the age of two had been treated in a Victorian emergency department for injuries resulting from a sling in the past nine years.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission has also cautioned parents, saying injuries include fractures, open wounds, head injuries, bruising and abrasions. The commission is working with international, state and territory counterparts to determine if a proposed US standard is suitable here. It recommends parents position their infants in a manner that allows parents to regularly monitor their infant’s breathing.

Ms Lincolne-Lomax, who founded Australia and New Zealand Babywearing Week, also advised avoiding risky activities that could lead to a fall, and being mindful of what the baby can reach. She said the baby should be carried high and tight against the chest.

Father of three Richard Delahoy, 42, has carried all his girls in an ERGO baby carrier. “The kids love it for a start, it’s easy for you and comfortable,” he said. “It’s also good when they are sick because all they want to do is be held. “You can hold them like that for a few hours.”

A Year in the Life of an ERGObaby: and Charlize Makes 3

After only a short wait, today we can introduce you to our newest ERGObaby who we will be following over the next year. Read all about her dramatic birth and her first outing in her ERGObaby below.

Candice writes: Number 3 has  has arrived and it’s……. another girl!! Jayde (our eldest) said it would be a girl and any boys names suggested got ‘Don’t be silly’ or ‘that’s funny’. She was adamant it would be a girl and her name would be Charlize. She was right.

My first 2 both arrived 4 days late so I thought I had a few weeks up my sleeve to get a car-seat organised and pack my bags. However, 16 days before my estimated due date, Charlize had other plans. Matt got a list of things to bring back to the hospital the next day that I hadn’t packed and also had to go get a car-seat before we went home.

The birth was very dramatic with Charlize making a fast appearance after my waters broke and with the umbilical cord wrapped around her neck. It felt like an eternity as we waited for that first cry! I stayed in hospital for 4 nights to enjoy the first bonding moments together before heading home to 3 under 3! Total madness!

Things with Charlize are going well. She feeds for what feels like all day, then sleeps pretty well at night with one wake usually between 1.30-3am. Her sisters adore her and every time I put her down for tummy time they have to lay down and talk to her. Miki is very helpful handing me at least 5 nappies at change time and Jayde loves reading with me as I feed.

I was a bit scared about using the ERGObaby the first time around. I had a friend lend me her insert after having Miki and I couldn’t work it out, but the Heart2Heart was so easy to use and she has never stayed awake in it! I love the Galaxy Grey colour and the star embroidery is super funky!

Our first outing was when Charlize was 5 days old and I had to go to the bank and get some groceries. Thankfully Matt was taking the week off work so he had the 2 older ones, so I just had Charlize. I popped her in the Heart2Heart then the ERGO and she was all snug and looked so tiny.

I decided in my freedom to grab morning tea before doing the boring things. We sat down and I drank my hot chocolate (before it turned to a lukewarm chocolate for once) and had a whole muffin to myself (instead of being left with crumbs). Charlize then decided she needed a feed so I kept her wrapped in the Heart2Heart while feeding her, then popped the ERGO straps back over my shoulders and kept going. After waiting in the huge line at the bank and then doing a big shop at Woolworths I felt great! Really feels like you aren’t carrying much weight at all. So there began my baby’s ERGObaby journey.

I was so worried how things would go with 3 girls so close together. Jayde is still a pram lover especially on long shopping trips or the zoo and Miki is only 16 months and does not walk where I want her to yet, (usually the complete opposite direction!) So the ERGObaby is the perfect answer for us: Jayde and Miki go in the pram and Charlize in the ERGO. I’m loving using it on park visits as I can still hold frightened hands to go down the slide or push when they are on the swing.

Then the big ERGObaby test, the zoo! I got a yearly membership as I just have to pay for myself as kids are free under 4. We can now go a few times each month as after that initial outlay it’s a free day out. We usually pack a picnic, but as my sister was up from Esperance and it was a last minute thing I just threw some snacks in my nappy bag. The kids had a ball checking out the reptile room. The HUGE crocodile was in its outside area on the grass. The zookeepers were feeding the Orangutans by the time we got there, so they came right up to the glass Charlize slept the whole way through her first zoo trip!

I also bought along my old ERGO and gave it to my sister to try with her 4 month old who also fell asleep once she was in it. They both liked it so much I let her take it home to use. I look forward to going back to our usual zoo trips now that I know I can be comfortable with my hands free if I need to catch a stray child or sit down for lunch.

It’s starting to warm up in Perth so we will be getting out and about more and I look forward to seeing how the ERGObaby goes in the Perth heat.

A Year in the Life of an ERGObaby: Tahnee meets ERGO (August)

We found out we were pregnant with baby number 5 in August 2009. It was a huge shock as we hadn’t been trying and we were only in our second month of business. Pregnancy, 4 kids and a hotel/pub to run wasn’t easy. Then in May 2010, baby Tahnee was born at my sister in laws house and we came back to the pub when she was a few days old. I’ll admit it was tough, business doesn’t stop just because we have a new baby. We tried using our ERGObaby carrier with her but having an 18 month old who was (and still is) going through the ‘it’s mine’ phase, it was impossible to wear her in it without him tantruming over his precious ERGO. Matt and I had discussed whether we should get another, there was no way I would get a pram because a pram never really worked for us before – we end up carrying the baby and pushing an empty pram around the place – not to mention the fact that we had very little space for a pram in the car.

Then there was the callout for a Year in the Life of an ERGObaby and here we are and Tahnee now has a beautiful organic ERGObaby to call her own. I’ll tell you now that we love our original ERGO, both Matt and I wear it – it’s easy to adjust and we wear it for hours without getting uncomfortable. The only thing I can complain about wearing it is that my darling toddlers just love to play with my hair when they are in a back carry and I end up with huge knots!

So anyway, back to Tahnee’s organic ERGO. I slipped it on for the first time on an outing to the supermarket(which is a whole 88km away from home) and could not stop gushing about how it’s even more comfortable compared to the other one we had, much to Matt’s embarrassment. Yeah, I need to learn to gush quietly. Tahnee snuggled down into it and went to sleep as if she had always been a little ERGObaby.

It really does make life a little easier. Take for example, grocery shopping. Most of us dread shopping with young children, even worse with a 3 AND almost 2 year old. There really aren’t any shopping trolleys designed for 3 children. Either I let my 3 year old run up and down each aisle making as much noise as possible and picking all the sugary cereal off the shelves to dump into the trolley, or I put two toddlers into the trolley seats and carry my baby. Then I’m picking things off the shelves with one hand and also trying to break up the toddlers from scratching each others eyeballs out because the seats are too close together and they are invading each others personal space. I swear I’m getting grey hairs just THINKING about it. Pop Tahnee in the ERGO and I have two hands free to break up fights and do my shopping.

I can also wear her whilst I’m doing the washing, vacuuming, mopping, serving customers and picking the kids up from school. The only thing I don’t do is cook because she is a bit too close to the stove for comfort (but I use to cook with Jye snoozing on my back when he was big enough).

These early days are super important for bonding with a baby and having her close to me all day just seems right to me. She is now 14 weeks and a happy, content little baby. She does have a touch of reflux, where she will vomit quite a bit after having a feed and carrying her has really helped with the amount of vomit, in fact I would have to say that the projectile vomiting has stopped since keeping her upright most of the day. The ERGO is easy to pop into the wash too, which we’ve had to do a few times now! Her head control is fantastic and she loves to peek out at everything going on around her, it has really given her a sense of being a part of our busy family life. She even puts her two cents in now that she has perfected the art of blowing raspberries!

One of my favourite things about the ERGO is being able to breastfeed while I work. It does take a little getting use to but it really is worth trying. I have breastfed Tahnee on demand since she was born which means that she doesn’t feed at the same time everyday. I know with my first few babies I stressed about being caught out somewhere that would make it difficult to give them a bottle. I don’t stress now, I simply let out the shoulder straps and feed her on the go – anytime, anyplace. Just be warned that most people love to peek under the hood to get a glimpse of your cute squishy little baby and be surprised when they come face to face with your breast – really funny when they pull back the hood without asking, believe me it happens more often than you think!

Living in a pub means work for us, every single day of the week. We are literally in the middle of nowhere, our town is just farms, our pub, a general store and a school. So when we do have some time to spend as family time, we don’t get to venture very far. As a family we love to go for walks, especially with 4 boys who are right into bugs and dirt!  Have you ever tried bushwalking with a pram? I didn’t think so. Matt will wear Jye (20 months) and I now wear Tahnee and we can go exploring in the bush across the road from our house. The kids love it, we love seeing them enjoy themselves and we all get some great exercise(this is more important to us than it is to the kids, they just want to spot a kangaroo or an emu)!

Right now our life is even more hectic. In addition to everything else, we are in the process of selling our little pub. We’ve already found a house to move into at the end of September back in the city and now we’re madly packing all our belongings. Matt made a few phone calls and was lucky that a previous employer had a position available for when we move. His job means that he will be going back to shift work though, which means the ERGO will get just as much of a workout while I juggle 5 children on my own most of the time. I may even have to try tandem ERGObaby wearing (a toddler in an ERGO on my back and a baby in an ERGO on my front). Does anyone have any tips on tandem wearing with the ERGO for me?

A Year in the Life of an ERGObaby: and Baby Makes 3

We, the Babes in Arms team, just couldn’t help ourselves and expanded our Year in the Life of an ERGObaby call out to pregnant mums. There were so many responses, we found it excruciatingly difficult to choose our 2nd mum and bub (especially as the newest little BIA member hasn’t even arrived).  However, in the end, we decided to go with our gut and chose a family we just love to love.

Without further ado, we introduce you today to Caprice and her family: husband Matt, eldest daughter, 3 year old Jayde (aka Jaydey Cakes), 15 month old Mikayla (aka Miki Moo) and our “ERGObaby” who is due on the 27th of August (gender to be revealed at that time).

With regular trips to the zoo and a Gold Coast trip in January, we are excitedly anticipating an adventurous year, captured right here on our blog.

Stay tuned for more updates as the month progresses.

A Year in the Life of an ERGObaby: Introducing Tahnee

Today we introduce baby Tahnee and her family. Tahnee was selected to be our first baby in our “Year in the Life of an ERGObaby” call out.

Tahnee and her blended family: Dad – Matt; Mum – Tracey; Brothers- Jayden (8); Bailey (6); Owen (3) and Jye (19 months) and sister, Charlotte (5 – who joins the family on school holidays), live in their own little country pub out in the middle of the nowhere.

The family have decided to put their little pub up for sale. The coming weeks will be a buzz of activity as they are yet to decide where they are headed. Perhaps the city? Perhaps further into the wilderness to a closed mining town with Matt possibly obtaining some work with a mining company he worked for some time ago? Woah –  the ERGObaby is certainly going to have it’s work cut out for it!!

Matt and Tracey first began babywearing in 2007, soon after discovering cloth nappies. They began with a sling, but Matt just couldn’t get the hang of it.  Tracey reports:

Soon one of my circle of mums brought an ERGO to our little mothers group. Naturally we ALL had to have a go and then it happened – the ERGObaby boom! It wasn’t long before you’d turn up at mothers group and toss your ERGO in the pile by the door with all the others. Since then we’ve done away with the prams, the ERGO is so much easier and saves precious boot space in our car(these 7 seater cars have an almost nonexistent boot!)”.

The Babes in Arms team are so excited to welcome Tahnee and her family onto our team and can’t wait to watch her develop and grow her own little personality over the next year.  Watch out for monthly updates from Tahnee’s mother Tracey.

“Babies” – a Year in the Life Call-Out

We showed you a sneak peek of ‘Babies’ the movie only a week or two ago. This movie follows 4 babies from 4 corners of the globe over a twelve month period. It captures their first smile, first taste of food, first steps – a whole plethora of ‘firsts’ in fact.

In the spirit of observing a baby over a period of time, Babes in Arms would like to explore a ‘Year in the Life of an ERGObaby’…..what does the life of a baby and her parents look like when they enjoy the freedom of the ERGObaby Carrier? What do parents get up to when they aren’t tied to settling their babies in a crib? What adventures do they go on when they don’t have to lug a bulky pram? How much easier can life be with an ERGObaby?

We are therefore calling all pregnant mums (or soon-to-be-dads) or new parents who have just welcomed their little one into the world. who would like to share their ERGObaby journey with us over the next 12 months through monthly blog updates.

To get started, we would be happy to provide a new award-winning ERGObaby Carrier and a ‘Heart 2 Heart’ infant insert. Throughout your journey, you will receive regular new products to use with your carrier which may include ERGObaby accessories, BabyLegs, and even a Rearview mirror. And, around the sixth month date, we may kit you out with a new release carrier (but shhh…. that product is still a secret). The total value of products gifted throughout the year will be worth over $500.

In return, you will need to provide monthly updates with a babywearing flavour of your baby’s journey, plus some images and/or video to use on our blog.

Interested? Leave us a comment telling us why you would love to use an ERGObaby with your new arrival and how it could make a big difference to your family life. Please also note your approximate due date or current age of newborn baby.

Thank you and all the very best!
