Australia and New Zealand Babywearing Week

Event Summary

Calling all parents across Australia and New Zealand who love to carry their babies in slings or carriers! This is your time to show the world the freedom that babywearing offers and to celebrate the joys of being connected both to your baby and to your community.

The concept is simple. Host a local babywearing celebration together with your friends and have the opportunity to win lots of great prizes, including $1500 (AUD) worth of cash grants to donate to your nominated baby or family-focused community project, charity or group.

This year marks the inaugural celebration of Australia and New Zealand Babywearing Week which runs parallel with International Babywearing Week  from 6th to 12th October. ERGObaby is the platinum sponsor of International Babywearing Week.

All Australia and New Zealand Babywearing Week celebrations will therefore occur within these dates. The international theme is ‘Safe Babywearing – Enjoy the Benefits’

Host a Babywearing Celebration

A babywearing celebration is easy to organise and completely flexible to suit your availability and environment. It may be as simple or as creative as you like. The only criterion is that all participants will either carry their babies in a safe sling or carrier or want to find out how to do so. Celebration ideas might include – hosting a local mother’s group babywearing picnic or morning tea – drawing together active parents for a babywearing yoga class or beach walk – choreographing a babywearing dance or sling fashion parade. Experienced babywearers may also host sling and carrier demonstrations and share safe babywearing tips at a local playgroup for example. The ideas are endless. Put your thinking caps on, invite your friends for there are lots of prizes to be won!

Community Grants and Participant Prizes

Anyone who participates in the celebrations literally wins!  The more you get involved, the greater your chance to win. Firstly, a $1000 grant will be awarded to the event that succeeds in attracting the greatest number of participants. The event’s host will subsequently present the grant to their nominated community beneficiary.

Secondly, a ‘People’s Choice Award’ will be presented for the most creative concept. This award includes a $500 community grant to support the event’s nominated charity or project and will be determined by Facebook fan votes. In these ways, babywearing not only supports your own child but supports families in your community too.

To recognize the sterling efforts of the two winning event’s hosts, the latest ERGObaby Performance Carrier (valued at $199 AUD) will be awarded. There will also be three more ERGObaby Performance Carriers to give away to other event hosts as selected by Babes in Arms, initiators of Australia and New Zealand Babywearing Week. Other babywearing prizes will be announced over the week via the Babes in Arms blog and then on Facebook.

Discount Vouchers for All

All registered participants of Australia and New Zealand Babywearing Week events will be rewarded for their involvement. Each participant will receive a discount voucher applicable across the entire ERGObaby range at  www.BabesInArms.com.au . The value of the voucher will proportionately increase as the number of people participating in the same single event increases.

It is therefore in every participant’s interest to spread the news to encourage as many as people to attend their chosen event, thereby giving themselves and fellow participants the greatest opportunity to reach the maximum discount coupon.

The discount coupons are tiered as follows:

1 – 14 participants = $10 discount coupon*

15 – 24 participants = $15 discount coupon*

25 – 49 participants = $20 discount coupon*

50+ participants = $25 discount coupon*

*discount applies to orders over $40.

The discount voucher code will be emailed to each participant subsequent to the babywearing event.

The E(rgo)-BA(b)Y TRAP

Recently, we received an ERGObaby from Caroline with the request that we replace the belt clip as it had snapped after only limited wear. To our dismay, we found the carrier to be a FAKE.  Caroline was mortified, but at the same time relieved that Connor had not been hurt as a consequence.  She wrote the letter below to illustrate the issue.

__________________________________

To Potential Babywearing Mums and Dads,

We were delighted when we received the news that we were pregnant again and couldn’t wait for the arrival of our second child.  The first thing on the to-buy list was an Ergo Baby Carrier as it would provide me with the freedom to look after our energetic toddler without having to fuss about having my hands full.  Of the seven mothers in my play group, five have the Ergo and always sing its praises.

So…off we went bargain hunting – first to a few reputable baby stores where they were very similarly priced and then onto e-bay.  We found a couple and watched various deals go by while waiting to snatch the perfect score.  Finally it happened, we “scored” a brand new black and camel Ergo Carrier for a bargain at $110 with original packaging and DVD.  The ebayer asked if we wanted the bulky box or if she could post it without.  Smelling a rat, I immediately requested she send it in its original packaging.

A couple days later our Ergo Baby Carrier arrived and we were relieved to note that it was in fact an original Ergo carrier.  The Ergo was great and accompanied us everywhere!

You can imagine our shock and dismay when the buckle snapped – we did not want to imagine what could have happened to little Connor!  We posted the Ergo to the Australian distributors and requested their assistance in replacing the faulty buckle.  Knowingly, they asked if we had purchased the Ergo on E-bay or a non-reputable store and we stated we had purchased the item on E-bay only a few weeks before.

After sending the Ergo in, we were informed that we had been conned and that it was indeed a fake article.

So, after an expensive lesson, we are just very grateful that Connor wasn’t hurt and feel it is our responsibility to to warn all fellow bargain hunters out there that you should only purchase the Ergo Baby Carrier from a reputable dealer – for the near future, I certainly would not risk purchasing it on E-Bay.

Yours sincerely

Caroline

Baby Steps: Birthing for Blokes

Last weekend we were excited to see our upcoming ERGObaby Performance listed in the Baby Steps section of Melbourne’s Sunday Herald Sun! How exciting.

There was also an article on Birthing for Blokes with some interesting hints for dads during the labour and birth of a new bub (interestingly, this is drawn from the book “Man with a Pram”.  Maybe one of you lovely readers could write one with a babywearing flavour in the heading ;-) )

Read the full article here and see the ERGObaby Performance.

A Year in the Life of an ERGObaby: and Baby Makes 3

We, the Babes in Arms team, just couldn’t help ourselves and expanded our Year in the Life of an ERGObaby call out to pregnant mums. There were so many responses, we found it excruciatingly difficult to choose our 2nd mum and bub (especially as the newest little BIA member hasn’t even arrived).  However, in the end, we decided to go with our gut and chose a family we just love to love.

Without further ado, we introduce you today to Caprice and her family: husband Matt, eldest daughter, 3 year old Jayde (aka Jaydey Cakes), 15 month old Mikayla (aka Miki Moo) and our “ERGObaby” who is due on the 27th of August (gender to be revealed at that time).

With regular trips to the zoo and a Gold Coast trip in January, we are excitedly anticipating an adventurous year, captured right here on our blog.

Stay tuned for more updates as the month progresses.

The FAKE ERGObaby Site Bounty

Have you been out and about perusing baby carrier stores and come across an ERGObaby carrier that just doesn’t look right? The potential danger of these carriers is real and we would like your help in stamping out these substandard products.

Today we introduce you to the Fake ERGObaby Bounty! Report a fake ERGObaby site by leaving a comment below AND in our discussion thread on Facebook and you will be rewarded with a TWO sets of BabyLegs of your choosing IF the site is verified as fake and is yet to be reported (we will keep a list here on our blog under “Fake ERGObaby Bounty -Reported Sites“). **

So how do you spot a fake ERGO?

This is the rule of thumb: anything that is claiming to be new WITH a DVD is FAKE (ERGObaby carriers were sold with DVDs in the past, but have been phased out)! There are other tell tale signs too but this is the easiest. The fabric is also different but hard to spot in pics. The body of the carrier is narrower in fakes but again hard to spot. The biggest difference and the biggest risk is what you CAN’T SEE – the lack of safety accreditation, the use of buckles and webbing (critical to the product’s integrity and safety) which are sub standard (as I saw last week with a woman’s broken waist belt on her fake ERGObaby!) The potential cost FAR outweighs any small financial saving made!! If you suspect a carrier is fake but you are unsure, you can email us first with a picture so we can have a look for you.

So are you ready to start hunting?

**not including eBay sellers- we are on this ;-)

ADD: Sites will be verified on Monday of each week. We thank you for your patience.

BabyLegs will be awarded to verified reports up until September the 10th, 2010. After this date, all reports will be goodwill.

World Breastfeeding Week: Combining Babywearing and Breastfeeding- Freedom on the Move

Babywearing allows on the run breastfeeding. How great does that sound? With a little bit of practice you can use babywearing as a tool to assist in integrating breastfeeding into your normal activities.  Breastfeeding whilst babywearing is discreet and can quickly calm a fussy baby.

Dr Sears suggests that breastfeeding whilst babywearing can assist with babies that are having trouble latching on to the breast. He feels that the positioning that sling provides impacts positively on the baby’s physiology, providing optimum conditions to relax and latch on. Has this worked for you?

We would like to hear from all you Breastfeeding, Babywearing Mums out there. Let us know (either by leaving a comment here on our blog or on our Facebook page) your best tips for successfully combining babywearing and breastfeeding.  We will award one comment with a set of BabyLegs legwarmers.

Full Terms & Conditions:

A. This activity closes at midnight August 6, 2010
B. A set of BabyLegs legwarmers valued at up to $14.95 will be awarded to one entry

World Breastfeeding Week: What Does it Mean?

Since Babes in Arms joined in the  World Breastfeeding Week from August  1-7, 2010 celebrations, we thought it would only be right to write a post to inform you about what it actually means and where it originated.

This is the 19th year that the week has been celebrated formally by the World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action (WABA), and breastfeeding advocates in more than 170 countries world wide. This year, the central theme is “Breastfeeding: Just 10 Steps. The Baby-Friendly Way” which provides us with an opportunity to reflect upon the Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative (BFHI) and refocus on where to now.

But what is the Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative (BFHI)?

BFHI was developed following the 1990 Innocenti Declaration on the Protection, Promotion and Support of Breastfeeding in which both WHO and UNICEF jointly challenged maternity services to implement the scheme.

Figures provided suggest that today only 28% of all maternity facilities in the world have at some point implemented the 10 Steps which has worked towards increasing the breastfeeding rates.

Baby Friendly Health Initiative (BFHI) in Australia

The Australian College of Midwives (ACM) is responsible for the administration and accreditation of health facilities as “Baby Friendly” here in Australia and are supported by a committee of representatives from a range of professional associations including the Australian Breastfeeding Association, child and family health, lactation and midwifery nurses. There are currently 66 Baby Friendly accredited health services across Australia.

The BFHI has extended the Baby Friendly program in Australia to include other service providers who support mothers to continue breastfeeding once they leave hospital. This has risen from the well recognised observation that the 10 Steps helps mothers to begin breastfeeding, it is not sustained within the public health guidelines that recommend breastfeeding until 2 years or more. Given this, Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative has been replaced with Baby Friendly Health Initiative here in Australia to integrate the BFHI community and BFHI paediatric.  You can read more at the Australian Breastfeeding Association

Breastfeeding: Just 10 Steps. The Baby-Friendly Way - What is it?

The 10 steps surround maternity hospital practise (now extended to maternal health services within Australia) and are a best practise sequence that WHO and UNICEF hope services will adopt.

They are:

1. Have a written breastfeeding policy that is routinely communicated to all health care staff.

2. Train all health care staff in skills necessary to implement this policy.

3. Inform all pregnant mothers about the benefits and management of breastfeeding.

4. Help mothers initiate breastfeeding within a half-hour of birth.

5. Show mothers how to breastfeed, and how to maintain lactation even if they should be separated from their infants.

6. Give newborn infants no food or drink other than breast milk unless medically indicated.

7. Practice rooming-in – allow mothers and infants to remain together – 24 hours a day.

8. Encourage breastfeeding on demand.

9. Give no artificial teats or pacifiers (also called dummies or soothers) to breastfeeding infants.

10.Foster the establishment of breastfeeding support groups and refer mothers to them on discharge from the hospital or clinic.

You can see videos for each step on the WBW site here

Babes in Arms will be celebrating World Breastfeeding Week by providing a babywearing flavour with tips on how to breastfeed whilst babywearing and opportunities for discussion around how Babywearing has supported you to breastfeed.

Supporting mothers to breastfeed and the tools to do so is the key to sustained breastfeeding. What do you think? What support were you given? Were you able to meet your own breastfeeding goals? Did babywearing help?
