One of the most practical advantages of babywearing is that you can go anywhere your legs can take you.
Stairs? No problem!
Crowded shop with skinny aisles? Done.
A train trip to the city during peak hour? No missing that trip and no need for assistance to board.
Sunset stroll along a sandy beach? Of course.
Ahhh….bush track with pot holes? Easy peasy!
Your endurance is your only limit! Babies and toddlers love the closeness that babywearing brings, and it certainly assists with bonding.
This month Babes in Arms would like to celebrate the freedom babywearing provides beyond the pram for parents and carers.
Leave a reply, in your own words, about what babywearing adventures you have taken that a pram could never have afforded. If you are an expectant parent, tell us about the babywearing adventures you dream of taking when your precious bundle arrives.

WOW well we went to the Greek Islands for a holiday with our two children but first stopped in Athens to look at all the magical historical sights. The morning we went to the Parthenon I made sure to take our Ergo for our
(at the time) 19mth old daughter. I had her in a back hold and I was able to hold my 3.5year old’s hand as we walked around the Acropolis. It was MAGICAL. There is even a gorgeous picture of me with little one in her Ergo on my back and me holding big one in front right in front of the Acropolis! We simply couldn’t have done this trip without the Ergo – no way she could have walked around the slippery marble and steep steps. So again thanks to Ergo we don’t miss a thing! Looking forward to doing it all again with another bubba! Seagreen would be awesome…
It is going to be amazing to stroll through the small waves of the sea carrying my baby in his babycarrier. There is no way you can enjoy this wonderful feeling if you are towing baby in a pram. We are going to visit family in Morocco after baby is born so a carrier will be great there also because everywhere you go in Morocco is stairs! A baby carrier will mean that we have the freedom to explore them hidden souks and alleyways where you find the most gorgeous and delicious foods and wonderful trinkets imaginable, this would only be a dream if you took a pram. If I won this prize this would be the most worn baby carrier ever made because we are always exploring and enjoying ourselves with our children and freedom is a must when you really are looking for an adventure.
I forgot to mention that the carrier in OrganicCranberry would be my most desired style. It is beautiful in it’s depth of colour! I wasn’t sure if I was meant to add it here to comments with my entry or not sorry.
I am expecting #3. Just going to the mall is going to be an adventure of its own. Im going to have a 3 year old and a 2 year old to race after and trying to push a pram between isles and people trying to keep up with my kids is going to be just about impossible w/o having free hands
If I was to win, Id like the ERGObaby Carrier, Organic Navy please
Ok where do i start i am 19 weeks pregnant with baby #2 and my first son is 9 mths old. The hardest things i found with him when he was a newborn is hanging out the washing!! I had to drag out his rocker out the back and the washing go and get him then put him in his rocker and try hang the washing out while trying to keep him settled if he was upset. Now we are in a two story house i avoid taking him out with me when i do the washing because its such a pain having to drag everything up and down the stairs. Also i avoided going to the shops because of having to get the pram out and holding onto a shopping basket it tricky business and i dont like to put him in the trolly baby seats because of all the germs not to mention how uncomfortable it looks. If i had of had a ERGObaby carrier it would have made these everyday tasks so much more easy even just to settle if he had a tummy ache or wanted to be close and not to mention a quick stroll to the park having my bub nice and snug would have been great! I think it will help alot with my new little one due in July. If i were to win id love the Navy Carrier.
The beach! We live on the sunshine coast and go to the beach a lot, prams would never managed the stairs to get to the bottom and the sand would be sticking in the wheels. Baby wearing allows us to take our youngest daughter down to the waves and she loves it!
Organic chocolate is divine.
When my daughter was two months old we left cold Victoria for an adventure in sunny tropical Nth Qld. It was wonderful to be able to peruse markets, go on rainforest walks, and wander along tropical beaches, without the hinderance of a pram. Using a mei-tai baby carrier ensured my daughter was cool, comfortable and secure next to either myself or her Dad, and we were free to hold our 4 year old’s hand. My favourite memory was going to wonderful Green Island. Whilst most parents struggled on and off the catamaran with their pram, we alighted with ease and comfort, and we were able to enjoy all the island had to offer.
In the Ergo range I particularly love the Organic Cranberry colour
I used my ring sling with my DD who was 14 months old while visiting Calgary Alberta Canada, and took the C-train all around the city. I would not have been able to fit a stroller in, and also just felt more comfortable having my daughter close to me in the crowded train. It was great for down town in the city as well to be able to go into little boutique stores and actually fit!
Now that My daughter is 22 months old I would love to have and ERGO, and I am hoping to have another baby on the way, I think that baby-wearing will make my life so much easier with 2 kids
I like the OrganicCranberry style best!
I cant wait to have more adventures thanks to baby-wearing, Hopefully more traveling, I have heard ERGO’s are great for airports!
Im expecting my second baby in 2 days & where we live we have beautiful bush & nature tracks where we love to go walking and exploring, however it is not pram friendly at all. I would love to have an Ergo to take my baby with me so we can enjoy the peace & tranquility of our surroundings without having to try attempt the stairs with a pram. I can also then have my hands free for my 2 year old as well to collect leaves & gumnuts safely in the bush.
When we went overseas with our twins we enquired about taking a double stroller with us on the plane, should be no problem. However when we went to check-in they told us our double stroller was not allowed to go with us! Luckily we also brought two baby carriers which absolutely saved us for 2 stopovers (of 14 hours!!) and 2 x 25 hour plain trips. During the holidays we had an amazing time and the carriers were so handy and easy to take on public transport, in other peoples cars and the kids loved being close to us and resting up from the exhausting trip.
We took our then 15 month old son Jake to Shanghai last year for my 30th birthday – people had warned us it was no place for a pram, stairs and escalators down to metro stations etc, plus very uneven footpaths where there were any. We took a backpack for our quite heavy son and it was fabulous. He was still having 2 day sleeps at that point, but seemed quite happy to have them in the backpack, allowing us to see a bit more of that fabulous city. It also won us plenty of favour with the locals, who were thrilled to see him being carried, and loved seeing his chubby wee legs sticking out the sides! we did get many pleas of ‘get him out so we can have a cuddle’ though! I am in love with the chocolate ergo baby carrier and would love to try it on my second bub, Luke.
Oh, the places I’ve been!
I have brains in my head,
My baby on back,
I can walk up and down any and every track.
With my baby close by,
I took the stairs, bus and train,
Up mountains, through markets,
And, with brolly, in rain.
A pram’s not for me,
I’m too brainy for that,
I have places to go,
With my baby on back.
Across the sand on the beach,
I’ve roamed and I’ve walked.
With baby on back,
We laughed, kissed and talked.
Today is my day,
I can walk any track,
I’m off and away,
With my baby on back!

I LOVE the Organic Sea Green Ergo
I write this as I sit at the table listing to my 6 yr old and 4 1/2 year old chatting away! Then I look over and see my 5 day old daughter sleeping peacefully! It has been a little while since we have done the baby thing. I took her out for the first time yesterday and have forgotten how bulky and cumbersome it can be with a pram. I would love an ergo so that we can do the pre school and school drop off with ease and with out getting the pram out. I would be able to hold the older girls hands to cross the rd and do the shopping with ease!
My husband would also love to wear our little one as he has never liked taking the pram into places as he says they take up to much space!
The ergo is the only sling I have tryed that feels good on with a bigger baby! (Our girls have all been bigger babes, with our newest born at 5kgs.)
I forgot to mention that I LOVE the Organic Ergo in sea green!
I love babywearing! It is such an easy way to get around with a toddler, especially one which is a “runner”. The most recent babywearing adventure I have had, was when we had a knock at the door, a passing motorist had come across stock on the road and stopped into our place to see if they were ours, turns out they were the neighbours, but we had to leave the house very quickly in order to help get them off the road. It took me less than a minute to grab the baby carrier, put it on, put Jake in it – and off we went. I knew he was safe on my back, and we were able to complete the task quickly and easily – without the worry of trying to maneuver a pram around cattle and very rough terrain, or have a wayward toddler trying to “help”. I would love an ergo in the Chocolate colour
I used to take my little guy to the movies in his baby carrier. The sleeping hood covered his ears perfectly and he would sleep through an entire movie. It was the perfect way to escape the boredom of sitting at home. Babes In Arms movies are a good idea however there are prams everywhere, screaming kids and you can hardly hear the movie. It is much better to take your little one tucked up against you in a carrier to a “big people” movie. They even get their own ticket! My sons very first movie was “He’s just not that into you” when he was 8 weeks old.
i’m looking to use my baby carrier when i travel to japan later this year. my friends tell me the best way to travel throughout japan is via their train system, but because its so crowded a pram is highly not recommended. thus, we desperately need to get our hands on an Ergo! i would love an Ergo in navy colour to help make our travels here and overseas with our gorgeous baby boy comfortable for all of us.
We love our Ergo baby and me
Its like a permanent hug
It gives mum freedom
and is a comfort for bub
It’s a breeze now shopping at the store
Handy for doing all those boring old chores
Bubs is always happy and can still be fed
It even helps soothe her to bed
The Ergo takes us on adventures anywhere we want being close to mum
We’ve been camping, bushwalking and boating too
our Ergo has been so much fun
We would love a navy one.
Do you like to baby wear?
We do! We do! We like it here.
I have done it on a bus,
It didn’t cause a lot of fuss.
No heavy prams to lift or fold,
On my back I like to hold.
Would you, could you, on a train?
What would y ou think about a plane?
I have done it in these places.
’cause for a pram there’s not much spaces!
I have done it at some rallies,
About homebirth mamas and pregnant bellies.
Cradled to my chest I need not worry,
About my daughter amongst the flurry.
What about on holiday,
It really is the only way.
Pram wheels won’t get stuck,
On all that sand and muck.
I have done it at the shops,
Waiting in line it is just tops!
In the sling, I can feed my baby,
And she’ll go to sleep, maybe
Really, there’s no other way,
To baby wearing we say ok!
Hmm, perhaps a little too much reading with the kids lately?
I would love an ergo in sea green
My second daughter is just shy of 4 weeks old. I’ve got a ring sling for her. Having used only a pram for my first daughter, all I can remember is how tiresome it was trying to fit through aisles, change direction. And never being able to see her expressions. The ring sling for my littlest one has made an amazing difference. I can interact with her while we’re out. I also do not have to struggle with a cumbersome pram.
Now I duck into the shops quickly, still have two hands to chase my eldest – no pram! And I don’t have to worry about strangers helping themselves and their germs to my baby.
We love to go to nature parks, but prams just get bogged in the dirt paths. We spent more time freeing the pram than looking at the animals!
One thing my two girls have in common is they both have reflux, and I wish more than anything someone had recommended baby wearing with my first. The difference is amazing.
We’re both comforted being close together and she’s upright against my chest which helps with the reflux.
Sadly the ring sling is one shoulder support, okay for now, but when she’s heavier not so great. Been looking at a Cranberry Ergo.
Every day with a toddler and an infant is an adventure – the kind of adventure baby wearing is for.
When my eldest son was 6 months old the Good Food and Wine show was on. I was very keen to attend but no one, not even my husband was interested in going with me. I thought ‘stuff it! I was going and I would take my son by myself’. I couldn’t imagine pushing the massive pram we have amongst the crowded aisles but that my ergo was the perfect carrier.
We had a wonderful day, at one point I had Jacob on my front in the ergo, a backpack on my back, bags over my arm and a tray with my gourmet lunch balanced in my hands, luckily some friendly strangers offered me a seat at their table and were very complimentary on my babywearing.
I’m now using our ergo with our second child who is 17 days old and he falls asleep the minute I tuck him in it.
I use my ERGO all the time to take my 8 month, 12kg son to the shops, walking the dog with friends, to the cafe, on the bus and train. I don’t drive – and without this carrier it would mean we wouldn’t get out of the house very much (because busses with stairs are not pram friendly!). ERGO has saved my sanity! Chocolate is more than just my favourite ERGO colour too
We baby wear every day and it is a savour. I can wrap my bebe and have my other 2 kids out of the car and in the shop door before the mum becide me can set up her pram lol. I dont have to worry about my kids running off cause I have 2 free hands to nab them. And I can easily fit through any door
It is difficult shopping with a non wearer though, all that dordling lol
I love the sea green
On the mundane end of the scale it means I can hang the clothes on the line or play fetch with the dog and have my little man (10kg) join in – nothing like domestic training early.
At the fun end, its bushwalking Lamington national park, attending crowded public events, markets and most of all travelling with both hands free and all the flexibility I had pre-bub. Airports with two hands, and no need to upset my bub for security screening (no metal means the detectors don’t go off) makes all the difference. Same goes with wheeling luggage and bike carriers (my hubby is a cyclist), if we had a pram to carry as well I think I’d sit down and cry! Love my ERGO. Sea Green will match my hiking pants beautifully!
The best babywearing adventure we have is hanging out the washing every day. I have worn my little girl to hang out the washing every morning since she was four weeks old. I take my time and hang it out slowly, she is almost always asleep by the time I am finished. A lovely way to start every day.
I could not have returned to volunteer firefighting without my Ergo! My partner and I are both volunteers and to get back into training I brought my firstborn on station with me – there was me taking care of radio traffic, walking up and down corridors and staircases for mock scenarios with a sleepy, content baby in arms! Now that number two is more predictable of an evening, I can return, once again, to weekly training. Only thing is, our Ergo has seen better days – like carrying my son around whilst tending to my horse, in airports, rainforests, the Guinness Brewery in Dublin, and Windsor Castle and The Tower of London (places no pram could go!)…and we need a new one…liking the sea green one…
So many people rave about the Ergo but so far we have only used a sling made for us by a beautiful friend. If we win we’d be happy with any colour, although chocolate is pretty yummy. So, right from when bubba was born, if life got too tedious at home I’d pop her in the sling, grab the dog, and hit the streets. It’s such hard work with the buggy but super easy without. My babe is number 5 after a huge gap, and a long time as a single mum with 4, and discovering how easy life can be with just me, baby, whoever tags along, and no paraphenalia is awesome.
My first bub is due in 4 weeks and I’m really going to miss having her so close to me. I’ve been looking into babywearing and I’ve read that ERGO is the best. We’re not planning an overseas adventure anytime soon, although heading down to the beach to watch hubby kitesurf will be a breeze with the ERGO. No way a pram could get through the sand. I’d love to win a Cranberry one.
I’m a family day care worker and own a Kozy. I use this almost every day so that I can go out with the children in my care and I have my 10month old daughter in the Kozy either on my back or if I need to breast feed on my front. It makes my life ssooo much easier when we go to the park or the library and I have a couple of other children that need my attention and need to breast feed/carry my non crawling/walking babe. Without it I wouldn’t be able to help a child down the slide or push them on the swing if my daughter also wanted to feed!
Another place I was so so grateful to have my kozy was at the baby expo! My Goddess! So many people and so many prams! But I just walked straight through/over them! We didn’t have to stop for anything – except to buy something! Didn’t have to stop and wait for a clear path, to breast feed, to settle an upset babe – we just kept on walking!
If I was the lucky winner I would really like a black ergo – my husbands been eyeing these off for a while and will only wear black haha.

My favourite story that I can remember (sleep deprived mumma here
) is that of the Melbourne Show last year. We brought 2 carriers along for the trip including my sisters Ergo
I have a 1 yo and a 3 yo. Our 1 year old was quite content being in the carrier all day however our 3 yo . . . well . . . has anybody tried to put a 3yo into a carrier for 7 hours straight let alone a pram, dreaming I tell ya
Anyway, we popped the additional Ergo into our back pack ‘just in case’. It was so light and easy to transport. How on earth do you fold a pram up into your backpack? Anyway, later in the day Malakai (3yo) wanted a nap and ‘hey presto’ carrier came out, 3yo went to sleep and we kept trotting around the show feeling very chuffed at our freedom. Also was great on the train ride home as there was no way we would have been able to fit the pram on a train in peak hour.
I live within minutes of the beach. I love to go walks with my children along the shore line, with a pram its just well not going to happen! So with mu bubba moe (whick is getting small now.. sigh) and my baby bjorn, we go for walks.. my 5 yr old, 3 yr old and 10 month old.
To add…
We are building a house on a very sloppey block.. we are just starting to dig the pads. I thought i would go take some photo’s of the progress, so with 10 month in tow i go out to the block.. a 30 min drive away. When i get there it has just finished a heavy down pour… just in time.. I put 10 month old in her carrier and step out… take my pictures and start to carefully walk down to the bottom pad where daddy is… low and behold i slip and land in the biggest mud pile… If i wasn’t baby wearing; my baby would have been thrown… (as much as i would of tried to save her).. i wouldn’t of been able to take any of the photo’s if i would have had the pram… (prob would of saved the bruise on my upper legs..lol) So baby wearing saved my baby from injury and kept her safe..
My bub had been hospitalized for a month after he was born, right that instance everytime i came to him, he knew he wanted something from me that anyone else couldn’t give other than milk, his mother’s tender loving care. Everyday i would come and sit with him from morning til late evening, just to feed him, cuddle him & be there for him. I use hotsling at the moment, and the sling had been with us ever since, it brings us close together. It deepened our bond. Now, at 3 months my bub is as healthy as ever and could never leave his hotsling behind. But we both knew, we would love having a new carrier in navy colour as his gift for being healthier than ever before.
We like to be an active family, but find that with our 4 month old son it can be a bit of a struggle getting around with a chunky pram, I often like to catch a bus into the city so I can meet up with Hubby after work and it is increasingly becoming more of a hassle as i always have to wait for a wheelchair bus so the pram will fit. An ERGO would make all our lives a lot simpler and allow us freedom to just clip it on and go wherever we want to go. We also like to go bushwalking and every year we are involved with the rescue team for the Avon Descent, having an ERGO will allow us to continue to do this as a family as the terrain is not suitable for a pram, (Lots of rocks and bushes). We also have a trip planned to South Australia, I am currently thinking of leaving the pram at home and just carrying baby for the trip, which is set to include a fair bit of sightseeing in pram no-go zones, with lots of steps (Caves). An ERGO would save both our backs when carrying Lochlan and allow Hubby to have some quality bonding time just the two of them.
A cranberry ERGO would be lovely.
As a single mother, babywearing isn’t so much about the great outdoor adventure, its about getting things done without losing my mind. Lawn mowing? Check. Washing the car? Check. Prepare meals? That too. I even wear baby on my back at family gatherings when she insists on staying with me but I have hosting duties. I only have two hands, and they’re very busy ones!
Organic Sea Green would be wonderful.
I love carrying my baby close to me and I could probably list more than 100 advantages of having our babies close to our heart, but I never thought that a carrier could save a life.
Yesterday, my family in Chile suffered one of the strongest earthquakes ever recorded. They had to hold on to each other to avoid falling on the floor. They had more than 200 after shakes since the earthquake today. Parents are advised to hold their babies in their arms due to the high risk of another earthquake during the next 24 hours, as it is the only way of ensuring their babies are safe. You will definitely not use a stroller if you are running to save your life.
I am travelling to Chile in two weeks time with my four year old daughter and my 8 month old baby. The first thing that I’m going to pack is my carrier and I’ll love to give away one carrier in Chile.
With 2 under 5 your baby carrier will ensure that we can get out and about and as a mum, I can still ‘share the love’ with the other two.
Regardless of whether I’m doing my groceries, or we are at the park, the baby carrier will provide as much freedom as a new mum can get. What a blessing this would be.
I love your sea green colour, it’s just devine.
There’s a painting on wall in my cousin’s lounge room, of an african lady wearing a contented baby on her back in a rainbow threaded carrier. It looks to me like she is just going about her daily life as a mother, life in the village must be completely different to our western culture but we do share a passion for baby wearing.
Before Christmas I had to work interstate for a few weeks, I was fortunate that my wife and our two children could come with me. Having a two and a half year old son and a three month old daughter forced us to make some difficult kid transport decisions as we have one carrier and two prams. Taking the carrier was an easy decision as both kids love riding in it, but who would go in the carrier and who would go in the pram? My daughter hasn’t really been in the pram as we’ve had a carrier since she was born. She tends to get preference for the carrier but my son still loves to be carried too. In fat de rides in it while I push the mower over the lawns, his head dwarfed by safety goggles and earmuffs while he hugs my back like a baby koala. So here we were, travelling with an infant in the carrier and a toddler in a pram.
We got to Sydney Airport and decided to take the train into the city, but the station is quite a few levels down via lots of lifts or escalators. My wife is always anxious taking prams on escalators, and I can’t say I blame her with the tight clearances, steep decent, and jostling crowds.
We made it down a few levels to the ticket office quite easily using the lifts, but once we had bought tickets and needed to make one last decent to the platform we discovered that particular lift was out of order. I heard the train pulling in and rushed to the escalator stairs with my daughter safely in the carrier, which left my wife struggling with a heavy pram, anxiously hurrying down the escalator only to reach the bottom and struggle to lift the pram up on to the waiting train. Oh for another (Sea Green) carrier!
It makes me smile when I see babywearers in places that they otherwise would not be able to take their babies if they had a pram. Recently we went to the beach with some friends. Access to the beach was via a very steep and slippery path. I said to my husband that I would not dare attempt it with a baby just in my arms. With my baby in the carrier I had both hands free for my safety and my baby’s safety. I actually took her into the waves with her in the carrier and she never cried because she was safe against me. However our two and half year old was upset by the waves and was only happy when on daddy’s shoulders. I’m sure a carrier would have made him feel secure also. We love the beach and is so nice to be able to take the young kids too, can’t take a pram on a sandy beach.
Recently we were away interstate and realised just how wonderful baby wearing was as majority of the old railway stations do not have lifts or escalators as they are trying to keep the heritage feel. So pram owners don’t tend to travel by train at all, but we were able to sight see with ease.
We went to Mackenzie Falls in the Grampians with our son who wasn’t walking at the time. Access to the falls is via hundreds of steep stairs. We were thrilled that we were able to see the falls and also take our baby. Our kids have experienced so many things that they wouldn’t be able to see till much older if we didn’t baby wear.
Both kids have been on planes in carriers. Safety rules say they must be strapped into the parents belt for landing and take off. However for long flights there are a lot of times where no-one has to have a seatbelt on. I always felt a lot less worried about my kids safety knowing that if there was turbulence they were always attached to me and if I was in the toilet or eating my meal and it wasn’t convenient for me to put my seatbelt on. I could just hold on and know they were safe if I was holding on. I’ve also noticed prams have to be put in checked luggage whereas carriers can be taken on board. So our kids have never had to walk much at airports.
I have noticed from personal experience it is also safer to babywear, in crowded cities people don’t notice kids down low in prams and often put backpacks etc in kids faces without realising it, when baby-wearing my kids are at eye level and people are a lot more careful.
At home the only way I get any housework done is to use the carrier, even cooking is possible while baby wearing as my apron fits quite nicely over the carrier and my baby to keep us safe from splashes. I even do gardening while baby-wearing. I can dig up potatoes, water, weed, pick beans, put out mulch and plant seedlings while my baby sleeps against me.
Soon we are going camping and were hoping to go on some fairly rugged walks through bush, but we really need two baby carriers, one for each child as a pram simply cannot handle this kind of terrain. The other problem is that my 2 and half year old can’t walk at the moment because he has a greenstick fracture to his lower leg. Having another carrier (in that lovely Sea Green
really would put us at an advantage because there simply isn’t anything we baby-wearers can’t tackle!!
